Default ground????

I recently did some engine work where I had to remove the intake manifold, after I put everything back together the instrument cluster works, but at times does not light up . Prior to removing the manifold I had the cluster repaired and it worked fine. When the cluster doesn't light up I can either pust the plastic cover or tap it and it will light up.
After all work was done and everything cleaned up I found a braided cable on the work bench that for the life of me I can't remember removing from the car! I read the forum posts pretty regularly and it seems that poor grounds are a common problem of dash malfunctions and a lot refer to the ground located on the right cylinder head. If this braided ground strap is indeed the culprit can someone tell me where it goes, as I have looked and can't seem to locate a place to attach it.
Thanks for any help.

On an 87 it is located drivers side-behind valve cover, then goes to the frame rail located by the battery-it is a major ground strap, I'm surprised that's not the only problem you're experiencing. But if tapping the display seems to help it light up-I'd be thinking your pin connections are either lose or need cleanning.

You are probably right, but I don't recall it starting until after the engine work, and I am not positive that the strap came off my car (lots of stuff lying around at times)
Thanks for the input, thought.
