Default Need Computer/Tuning Basics

I could use some basics re. how to tune an '85 with 406 c.i, S'Ram, 219 cam, headers, AFR heads, 4 + 3 trans. I'm lost in the computer world and most texts begin "over my head". I don't have a lap top or any other tuning equipment to date. Where do I begin? A logical step-by-step procedure would be great! Hoping to hear from someone...Thanks, Jack

Start with a used laptop, a P1 machine will do fine and can be had for $50 or less. Get one with an active matrix / TFT screen. Next for your ECM (1985 used the 870) download WinALDL here http://winaldl.joby.se/ Also on that site is a link to a schematic for a very simple interface cable.
Next you need a PROM burner, I use this one http://www.futurlec.com/EPROMProg.shtml
Then you;ll need some blank chips like these http://www.moates.net/product_info.p...products_id=38 And the adaptor for it http://www.moates.net/product_info.p...products_id=37 You'll need to do some solidering to install the adaptor.

Lots of good information over at Third Gen - go here:

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/di...uide-book.html

Read it, re-read it, wait a few hours for your head to stop spinning, then read it again.
