intermittent starter problems; Heatsoak?
The starter in my 88 operates intermittently. Sometimes when I turn the key, the flywheel doesn't turn but I can hear the starter motor operating. This sounds like a solenoid problem but I'm not sure because I can start the car by leaving the key in the ON position for 5-10 seconds before I crank. :confused: A friend of mine has exactly the same problem and he's never been able to figure it out. Does this sound familar? Any ideas?

Sounds like you have some missing teeth on your flywheel ring gear and if it stops at the right place when you shut the engine off, then the starter pinion gear has nothing but air to try and turn. Same problem with your friends car.

I have had this problem all summer long, my 89 vert was fine until it got hot in Phoenix, would start if car was cold, but when it gets hot have to wait sometimes for an hour, replaced positive cable,checked all systems,finally bought a heat blanket from summit, still have problem, am going to order vats bypass from Mid America, one member stated that he had the same problem and it was the vats doing it to him, I have done my home work on this problem and will see if vats is problem.
