I am working on my 90 to replace a leaky intake manifold gasket. Been following the shop manual and things are going ok. But I can get the injector assembly out. I have the runners off, injector assembly bolts off, everything seem loose but the injectors won't pull out. I don't want to force and break anything. Any suggestions/ tip? Also I don't see how I will be able to get the runner bolts back in without taking off the valve covers. Thanks.
HELLO I JUST DID MY GASKETS ON A 91 L98 THE RAIL ASSEMBLY WAS TOUGH TO GET OUT BUT ALL I DID WAS KIND OF ROCK BACK AND FORTH GENTLY AND THE RAIL POPPED OUT MAKE SURE YOU LUBE THE O-RINGS WHEN YOU PUT IT BACK ABOUT THE RUNNERS BACK ON REAL TOUGH YOU NEED THE TORQUE BIT SET THAT IS LONGER THAN NORMAL I BELEIVE I BOUGHT IT AT PEP BOYS,AUTO ZONE ETC.IT COMES WITH AN 3/8THS ADAPTER ALSO A SWIVEL SOCKET IS HELPFUL SORRY I DONT KNOW EXACT NAME OF TORX BITS YOU CAN EMAIL ME IF YOU LIKE JENNMARK23@SBCGLOBAL.NET.
Thanks I'll go try rocking my injectors. I kind of hate to ask the question, but, is there anything else I should replace while I have things tore down?
Ok, I got the injectors out. They look pretty dirty. Lots of grit on the outside of the injector and on the inside of the hole they go in. Any suggestion on how or what to clean them with? Can I spray throttle body cleaner down the injector holes?
Also the injectors look a little varnished on the ends. Is this normal? The guy I bought the car from last spring said it had new injectors.
Dont bother trying to clean them with spray. Either have them professionally done or replace them.
While its off, replace the o-rings in the fuel injector rail, major safety item. o-rings should be available through fel pro or your local chevy dealer. I got mine from a place that cleans injectors, paid about $10, takes 5minutes to change. Make sure and grease them up a bit (do not use vaseline). Teflon based lube is best (head to a local pool supply store)
and now the bad news, you don't need to pull the injectors to get the intake manifold off....replace all the ''o'' rings, like said above and fuel line connections too
Hello again think I can explain the torx bit set a little better. The bit set is an extension that is longer than a normal socket that fits an adapter that goes into your drive. It is probably 2-21/2 inches longer than those short torx sockets.Should be able to purchase at most part stores the name is AmPro 16pc Industrial star bit set #T33242.There's only a couple of bolts on the bottom of the runners but you need the ext. sockets and some skinny fingers good luck.
hey, i've got that same ampro torx set...violated my personal ban on taiwan tools and bought em cause they were longer....my set was missing the little ball in the drive, bit kept falling out, tried a BB from my sons daisy air rifle, works perf now..had to grind down the shank of the T40 for about 1'' at the torx end to clear something on the tpi...only taiwan tool i've ever bought that worked
it is possible to put the lower runner bolts in with the valve covers on, but its a total pita...an industrial bolt supply house can provide ''socket head" (allen wrench) bolts that make it a bit easier, not a lot
i've got one flat-blade screwdiver that is just the right size to turn those torx heads most of the way in, saves a lot of time, not good for final torque tho
Thanks for all the good advise. Just about got things wrapped back up. The only issue I had was stuck bolt in the bottom of the throttle body (holding the coolant and AIC casting on). Drill and easy-out worked well. I cannot find a replacement bolt anywhere. The local dealer says I would need to order a $50 replacement kit which includes a new casting. For now I am using an allen head bolt instead of a torx. Anyway it started right up last night. I still need to check the timing and adjust the idle then I should be back on the road. So far no leaks.

I don't think the cover kit even comes with the screws. There is a screw kit #17112369 for the '90. Not sure what the price would be, but GMPARTSDIRECT has it for $14.49, but they probably want $15.00 shipping. The list is $27.85, but you'll do better than that from most dealers. Still too much for 15 screws.
Since my main objective was to fix the intake gasket leak, I decided to leave the injectors alone. It was running pretty good so I'm going to wait for a problem. With the injector question, I was mostly trying to figure out if the seller sold me a line of B.S. The more I work on this car the more I think he was not entirely honest with me.
As for the screws, I guess I'll leave it with one allen head and the others original torx. I don't think anyone I know will notice. But then again I don't have any vette owning friends. I am sure if I ran into one of you guys that would be the first thing you'd notice.
