Default Need help identifying this connector...

I am fixing all the wiring problems that I inherited from the previous owner and I have come across a connector that is coming out of the driver side main wiring harness. It is a two wire connector with what looks like two red wires going to it (maybe it is one red and one orange, the wires are discolored due to engine heat). There is not mate to this connector. One of the wires is cut, but the car seemed to run fine without it.

Any ideas what it goes to?

Ahh, same as mine. I'm at work now and trying to picture the harness in question. I can't pin point right off hand but can take a look later today for ya. It's the the main harness on the drivers side behind the battery right?

The harness in question is part of the main harness that comes through the firewall behind the battery, however, this connector is sticking out of the haress as it runs past the driver side wheel well. I'm not sure if it actuall goes through the firewall.

About how long are these wires? Where do they stop? What type of connector (round, flat, square)? Kind of sounds like wires for the alternator but you say the car runs fine. Anyhow give me the info and I'll take a look.

My car has an auxilary fan in front of the radiator, but I have never seen it work. I just assumed that the previous owner installed it. could this connector go to that aux. fan? Could this be a factory installed option? If so, where is the aux fan relay located in the engine compartment?

The auxilary fan isn't suppose to come on til coolant temp reaches around 230*. Mine has one to but it has spiderwebs on it since my temps don't run over 190*. It is factory installed. I don't think it goes to the aux. fan but not 100% sure. The aux fan relay is located between #1 and #3 spark plugs on the drivers side, it looks like one plug sensor.

There was an factory auxilary fan as part of the Z51 and Z52 suspension packages and the operation is controlled by the ECM with input from a coolant temp sensor. It typically doesn't turn on until coolant temps reach a set temp (228 degrees) but it should run constantly when the A/C is on.

On my 87, the aux fan relay is located at the lower left front of the radiator shroud just behind the bracket that holds the LH hood gas strut. The main cooling fan relay is below the power brake booster.

That's the coolant fan temp switch. It should have a single green wire coming off of it.

I didn't find a wire and connector like the one in the pics on my 87 and there is not a lot of differences in that part of the harness. The connector looks like a typical GM weatherpak connector, and given the length of it, it should not be able to reach to much more than the master cylinder. I would like to know where the male connector is on his car

You right c4cruiser, that is the coolant fan temp switch. The engine fan relay is located next to the brake booster correct and the H.D cooling fan relay is located on the back side or the radiator shroud.

The one wire that is connected to the connector runs in the main harness towards the front of the car. From what I saw at the aux fan, the two wires are red and black with a stripe. I found the aux fan relay in front of the radiator shroud, but there isn't an extra red nor an orange wire going to the relay (just one red wire). I will do a contunuity test from the relay to the connector in question after I get off work this evening. The main cooling fan ciruit is complete and perfect, so I know this connector doesn't go to this (the sensor between #1 and #3 cylinder does indeed go to the main cooling fan circuit).

Thanks so much for all your help so far!

I can confirm that the uncut red wire does indeed go to the aux fan relay in front of the radiator shroud. I still cannot find the male counterpart for this connector. Does anyone know what color the other wire is supposed to be?

I have been reading my GM manual for the 1986 year model and according to the Electrical Diagnosis Manual Supplement, I have the all the relays/switches for the "Heavy Duty" (B4P) Cooling Fan circuit which includes the aux fan motor. The only weird part about this is that the manual states that this HD setup is on "Later Production" 1986s, while mine is an early 1986.

SOOOOOOOOO, could it be that the factory was installing the components for the HD setup all along, but just didn't hook it up according to the schematic until late in the 1986 production run??

Is there anyone out there that has an early 1986 that has run into this before?

I have finally resolved and fixed my wiring dilemma. I looked everywhere for the missing male connector, but could not find it, so I must determine that the previous owner removed the male half for whatever reason. I found that my car does indeed have the later style B4P Heavy Duty cooling fan circuit. I took the wire loom completely off the main harness to inspect ALL of the wires in this section of the harness. I crimped, soldered, shrink-wrapped, and taped and extension wire to the jump off box behind the battery (this is what the red wire did; provided 12 volts at all times). I also re-connected the dark blue wire from the aux fan circuit to the dark blue wire on the main fan relay (as per the oem wiring diagram). I hooked up the battery and test the circuit at the temp sensor on the block and everything works like it should! I installed new wire loom on the main harness and taped in a couple places. It looks clean and completely stock.

I just wanted to say thanks to all those who helped me out! This has been bugging me for sooooooo long....I am really happy that it is finally taken care of.

Thanks!!

I know, I know....This car is currently going through a very tedious overhauling. Wiring is one of the last steps before I put the car back together. I re-painted the whole car by completely disassembling the car and hanging the individual pieces on the wall. The entire interior has been removed so that I can install new carpet, seats, sound system, etc. I took the entire rear suspension apart to sand-blast and install new poly bushings. There is still a lot to do, but I am on a downhill battle now, so it's a little easier now that I can see results.
