Recently read about cleaning the resistors or wires in the mass air flow sensor. I believe a current is kept on them after engine shutdown to burn off the collected dirt. I guess after a number of years there is a permanent collection of dirt that will change air fuel mixture.
The process of cleaning was explained to remove it from the engine and squirt the resistors with carb cleaner till shiny again. I realize the up most care is taken not the damage these fragile resistors. Sounds good on paper. Has anybody had experience doing this or other information on it?
When I got my car it had codes for the MAF, and the relays. I did use some TB cleaner on the MAF. I replaced the relays at the same time. No codes since, it's been two years now. I descreened the MAF and removed the heat sinks as well, at that time.
Do a little research before you cut out those screens-guess what? the general didn't just wanna spend money on some unnecessary screens , they did it for a reason-granted-you MAY gain 2 hp, wow! I'd listen to goldeneye on this one.
From what I understand the screens are to provide uniform air flow around the resistors to get proper sensing from them. Really dont know how it would effect the A/F mixture. I think it might make it richer due to more cooling where the PCM thinks more air is coming in, but it thats a guess. Probably will clean it this weekend with care.
Pep boys sells a MAF specific cleaner for about $4. I was told not to use carb cleaner. Also be careful not to overoil when cleaning the filter if you have a K&N. I left my screen on. After seeing a bug stuck on it one day, I'm glad I did. Have no idea how he got in there everything was sealed tight.
Rick thanks for the info. The artical I saw was not for corvettes and the MAF had a much different configuration. A gut feeling told me the carb cleaner sounded a litttle harch for the kind of MAF we have. I'll check out the other cleaner designed for it.
