Fuel pump needed, have question.
My fuel pump is failing.
Hooked up to pressure guage, only 30 psi and my motor is dying from no fuel.
Can't find spec on what I put in there years ago.
Bosch hi volume I think.
Anyway I need a recomendation as I need to replace ASAP.
1988 C4 stock tank.
388 cid motor 12:1 compression with a 150 shot.
All hi perf internals
Computer program says it is pushing 720 HP at the fly wheel based on time/weight/speed calcs.
You could use Bosch pump # 0 580 254 005, which is for direct intank use. Or # 0 580 254 984 which can be mounted inline or intank. The latter is the same as the pump that Accel sells for 870 hp. There is also an excellent write up on installing the latter pump by T.J. Wong.
Check out www.caspeed.com/boschpump/boschpump.html for the article.
I installed the Walbro 255 pump (along with the plug-n-play wiring) from Racetronix for my 383. I'm happy with it.
Are you sure it's the pump and not the fuel filter?
Also, another forum member was experiencing similar symptoms and it turned out to be that the sock screen on the bottom of the fuel pump was being sucked into the inlet and restricting flow. Just something else to check...

Thanks for the info.
Article is for 93-96 C4.
Will that fit my 88?

I changed the filter, plugs, and have new gas.
I did not pull the the pump to inspect though.
The referenced article was for a later 93 vette. However the modifications shown would be applicable to the earlier 88. You could just use the 0 580 254 005 pump, which is said to be identical in flow but has a built in screen on the bottom. Both pumps were sold by TPIS at one time.
FYI.... E85 is over 100 octane and will be a much cheaper fuel to use than race gas provided you make some minor tuning changes. (You need to set the AFR at around 8:1 instead of the 12.5-13:1 that its likely currently at). As this stuff comes on line at more stations in the next 5 years, it might make sense. You may be able to throw an AFPR in there if you dont have one already and tune-on-the-fly for whatever gas you use.
Trust me on the E85, change is good.
I actually did a little digging and found some WRX guys who claim they converted to E85 use. The one had a stock fuel system, except for a Walbro 255 liter/hr pump. He has had no problem running E85 on it.

Since this is a fuel pump thread I didn't want to turn this into an eco-geo-political-ozone thing.
In five years I will have gone through at least two rebuilds.
Also, my issue with E85 is that it is a political football with the corn states. The amount of energy used to produce 1 gal of ethenol (tractor, plowing, erigation, water, harvesting, processing the corn, distilling heat, etc.) equals the amount of energy the 1 gal of ethenol provides. In other words it's a job creating wash energy wise.
Now if we used sugar cane like Brazil the yield is much higher and that would make sense. Sugar cane grows like a weed and the dried waste is used as fuel to produce more ethenol, sugar cane.
The old 'it takes more energy to convert corn into ethanol' is B$ now.
New chemical processes are online. In the near future yard clippings will be able to be turned into ethanol. Im a chemical engineer. I know whats going on in the industry.
Ethanol is the best thing coming for us (you). Why do I see it this way? Because I am tired of farmlands (aka racelands) being turned into housing developments.
If you like housing developments or middle east dictators, then maybe we should all continue with that type of attitude.
But I am getting sick and tired of seeing farmlands turned into darned housing developments with some 'family guy' yelling at me to 'slow down' when his stupid house wasnt there 2 years ago and I could go as fast as I felt like.

Unfortunately, the only way currently to make a cheaper ethanol is to utilize synthetic technology. Synthetics utilize ethylene in the production and are far cheaper than natural production. The reason that farm produced ethanol is used is because the government has been "convinced" (read as lobbyist dollars) to provided a subsidy to enable natural ethanol to be produced competitively to synthetic ethanol. Remember that AD has very deep pockets and many representatives are in said pockets.
And as a side, I am a ChE and I do work for the largest producer of Ethanol and am intimately familiar with the economics of both natural and synthetic ethanol.
Additionally, the President has now rolled back the oxygenate requirement, and as such, MTBE can still be blended following 5/1/06. Some of the largest MTBE suppliers have already begun efforts to convert plants to iso-octane (DIB), lower octane, thus lower chain value. The removal of the oxygenate requirement was done in an effort to free up gasoline supply and hopefully reduce costs associated with the poorly planned EtOH logistics. How many have seen gas stations with no gas. More poor planning by industry and government.
BTW, I run Weldon pumps, but have run Walbro 255 twins in the past.

Just wanted to circle back and say thanks for the responses.
Pump and E85.
I installed the Bosch in tank referenced above.
Car runs great now.
I'm thinking that the pump was slowly getting worse overtime and it was getting louder.
New pump is quite and car kicks azz again!
