Default Curious about Blowers

I am just a newbie when it comes to forced induction. Having said that, I have noticed several folks have switched to carburetor setups. What I am wondering is, why don't I see any blowers on these. Like 471 or 671. The big ole stick out of the hood type blowers. It seems like they are a bit cheaper and I have always loved seeing them sticking out of the hood.

I have just never seen anyone really talk about them in conjuction with a C4. Is there some reason they can't be/aren't used ?

They can be used but they will give you less power on the same engine.

Do they give less power because of the carbs or because of the blower design ? Its hard to imagine the supercharges that fit under the hood would give more power than the top mounted variety that use large belts.

Thanks for the info

One thing is that the roots variety that you are talking about are rather inefficient. Blower effieciency is rated by what is called adiabatic efficiency. Basically it means how efficient a blower uses the energy that drives the blower. The more energy input to drive it to create boost also creates more heat. And heat is your enemy in a blown car, heated air is less dense, which makes less power and also a high temperature air charge is more prone to detonation.

A blower with a higher adiabatic rating will create more power. A centrifigal blower not only fits better in a C4 but is more efficient than a roots type. A screw type is even more efficient in that it is also a positive displacement type that displaces X amount of air per revolution. That is why they work so well in trucks where low end boost to create low and midrange Hp and Tq is desired.

also the fitment would be horrible due to rack and pinion clearance. A bottom pulley for the blower wouldn't fit unless the rack and pinion was moved somehow.

I'd gladly put an LT1 eaton kit up against a vortech or ATI anyday. Eaton will make more low end torque and that's what we all love.

A roots has been done. Just cut a hole in the top of the LT1 intake. Getting the belt setup is a real PITA. And most owners don't want to cut a hole in thier hood.

Magnason used to make a twin blower setup, and is now making an a different setup, similar to thier LSX setup, not really a roots though.

It makes better sense packaging wise though to mount it off to the side.
