Default bad heater core?

After car has been setting a while, a fine "foggy-mist" appears on the windshield. Upon start up, it goes away until next time car is started and there it is again. In addition, I have some moisture on the passenger side floor. My first thought was heater core leaking. But the vapor that accumulates does not appear to have antifreeze in it and...living in Alaska I have accumulated some experience with anti-freeze vapors. There is no anti-freeze taste, smell. or residue...so I'm rethinking the heater core.

I know very little about air conditioning. I note that there is some condensation formed when the air conditioner is operating and I get quite a bit of water that leaks out underneath the car after I've used the air conditioner. Could it be that some of it is not being eliminated and picked up by the heater?

Doesn't seem to be a problem while I'm driving, only when it's parked and off.
The ONLY time I've noticed it when driving is on the way home, I have to drive through a low area for just a moment. I always pick up a little fog there, but it also disappears right away.

By the way, the moisture is on the INSIDE of the window.

Some of you must have experienced this problem before, what do you think, excess moisture from the air conditioning unit or a bad heater core? Any help will be greatly appreciated, this is starting to bug me.

When my core took a dump my windshield fogged up and the passenger side footwell was wet also. Sounds like yours has failed

Shouldn't I smell antifreeze, or wouldn't it leave a residue (slippery) to deal with? Also, I swiped the fog with my finger this morning...no taste. Normally, antifreeze is real sweet. Dogs love it...I lost my favorite golden retriever to a small puddle of anti-freeze.

If it does turn out to be my heater core...how much of a job is it to replace on a 92? I've replaced heater cores on other vehicles, but the vette.....? Car intimidates me a bit. [IMG][/IMG] :chevy

Same thing in my car. I think it's a faulty vaccuum actuator or line. When I crawl under the dash I get vertigo :U so just can't seem to stay down their long enough to take stuff apart and replace it. If you can, look next to where the steering column comes out of the firewall. There is a vaccuum signal sender thing right there. Maybe begin testing for loss of vaccuum signal stregnth there? Quite a few people on here have done this. Anyone?

When the heater core started going out on ours you could defiantely smell the anti-freeze. It'll give you a headache. We did get ours fixed and we do get the moisture on the inside every once in a while. From what I've seen it's normal. Also, if the heater core is leaking it's a Bit*h to get the glass clean. Took me months to get the nice again after having it replaced.

Maybe the reason you do not smell anti-freeze is that the mixture in your radiator is diluted. I do not know what else would be causing the wetness in your passenger footwell, but then again I am not familiar with '92's mine is an '85. I hope it is something other than your heater core. If it turns out to be the core it is a do it yourself job, I replaced mine. Get a good manual and be patient, it is hard to work in those cramped conditions but it can be done. Take care...Jeff

My experience with antifreeze makes me really question if my heater core is leaking. It's water that I'm seeing and tasting. No antifreeze. Therefore it couldn't be the heater core. Also, I've lost no antifreeze/coolant from my reservoir. But...the floor on the passenger side is definitely damp and the windshield still gets a small amount of fogging (very temporarily upon start up), ????

I originally asked if it could be anything to do with air conditoning condensation somehow finding its way into the system...because that would just be plain ol water, which is what this seems to be.

We have been recieving a lot of rain lately, so maybe I just have a leak. The other thing I did was remove the foam filter for the cab air intake (fits under the windshield wipers) which I purchased from ecklers to keep dust out of the car (that works by the way)...thought maybe it was holding moisture and pulling it into the cab.

This morning, I had no fog on startup, so maybe that was it. But the floor problem still bugs me. Any other thoughts?

The evaporator case has a weep hole to drain away moisture. It's not very big and can sometimes clog. Poke around under the casing and make sure it's open. Otherwise you can get the moisture you're describing.
