i have an 87 auto (stock) and have been pulling code 36 for a while now. i have checked vacume lines, connections and looked to see if the maf is actually 'burning off' (it is) and all looks good.
today i tested voltage and this is what i found:
i ran the car for five minutes, then, i tested both purple(term 'e') and blue (term 'd') terminals at the maf, while the car was running and then while the car was being shut off.
while the car was running the purple wire was recording about 14 volts and after the car was shut off it recorded the proper twelve 12 volts.
so with the blue wire, when the car was running, no volts were recorded, but after the car was shut off i recorded the 12 volts again.
as far as i know, this is all ok, so what test/checks do i need to do now??
i live in australia and dont have access to a scanner or a chevy dealer (chevy doesnt exist here) so im trying to do this myself.
Yes Code 36 is MAF sensor burn-off function fault. You must have some sort of guidance to get you this far. Do you have a Factory Service Manual? If so, follow the diagnosis chart to find the problem. Have you checked the MAF sensor burn off relay or just the MAF? Let us know.
What state are you in mate? Im in QLD, i had an 87 for 6 years, now have a 94. If you live close by i can come and have a look at it for you. Id guess its the Burn off relay. I can help you get one of them too if need be. (which could be anywhere since its been converted to RHD) Ill leave you a PM with my mobile phone number and email address
First, I'd check connections to all 3 relays, I say 3 because most guys go with the MAF burnoff and MAF power relays-it's always been suggested (written) if you replace the MAF power-you replace the MAF burnoff too, the third I mention is the fuel pump relay BTW, this one is notorious in our earlier C4s (mines an 87 also) for having the wire insulation going into the relay shrinking back and exposing bare wires-mine were actually touching one and other. Now for the FSM quote. "The oil pressure switch or the ECM, through control of the fuelpump relay will provide 12 volts for the MAF power relay which provides the 12 volts needed by the MAF sensor". Funny they don't mention this in the Code 36, but do in the code 34 section. Good luck.
hi guys,
sorry case, im on the other side of Aus in perth so coming over will be hard... but thanks for the offer mate, appreciate it. Are you part of a club over there?
ive replaced the two relays on the fire wall behind the battery, so i know they work. i have heard of the fuel pump relay playing up, but im not sure where it is, i cant find a diagram anywhere.
i dont have a service manual..... or owners manual (if you guy have an owners manual in .pdf format, id love to know) i got to where i am by the good people at corvettemechanic.com..... but sometimes its good to hear other peoples experiences too.
