Well, I'll be the lone dissenter, then.
I have MX's on my C5. They're loud, "buzzy", and do not handle the wet very well AT ALL. Traction recovery is ok (I like throttle oversteer- it's fun!), but overall grip is not real impressive. For the $, they're OK, but not great.
I have 712's on my C4. I trully HATE these tires. They have TERRIBLE turn-in performance and the grip is inconsistant in midcorner. I would NOT recommend these tires.
I have 712's now and the only reason I bought them was the price. They are okay, nothing special. If you replace some old, rock-hard, balding tires with Kumho's, you'll think they're the greatest...of course, any new tire would feel that way. Personally, I'll wait next time and spend a little more money. I've learned tires are not something to go cheap on.
I've got a friend that's got a set of 712's and he hates them, traction isn't so good. I'm using their autocross tires and they're amazing, but that doen't do yo that much good.
Wrong magazine umr...this is the Car and Driver test. The bad thing about this test is that many of the tires tested are not available in C4 sizes. Other than that, it is a pretty interesting read.
One thing for the original poster to keep in mind is that everyone has different expectations for their tires. The only sure way to determine if a certain tire is good for you is to try it.
If I drove my car very infrequently and could afford a set of tires that only gave me 10k miles in 10 years, then I'd probably buy something other than Kumho's. Because my car is a daily driver though I'm willing to sacrifice dry traction for all weather performance, since that happens to also come with long tread life, I'm happy.
They are by no means the best tire out there, but they're some of the best tires you can get for the money. Anybody who has noise problems, I would suggest you check and re-check your balance and alignment.
