ive checked my fuel pump relay, and the wires going in to the plug have shrunk back(like Rick L said they do) they do not look like they are touching one another but im going to make sure they are not exposed anymore.
ive been getting the code 36 (not on every drive of the car though) and ive checked all connections to and from the maf, voltages and actual burnoff of the wires.... all is good.
so people have been telling me the fuel pump relay provides the 12 volts for the maf. i guess the exposed wires may be causing the (random) code 36.
i cant find a new plug in perth (west australia) anywhere, so is there a way to re-cover fp relay wires at the plug...... is electrical tape my only option????
You can remove the wires from the connector and then slip some shrink tube over them. One side of the connector has a hinged flap, pop it open and then try and tweek the 2 barbs so you can pull the wire out. Do one at a time so you don't f**k up the order.
Exactly what I did, if you have a Radio Shack, they carry shrink tubing,
some hardware stores do too. I found two types, black shiny type, and a rubber looking one, either will work. Like Agent 86 said-"one at a time", then I usually you a hair dryer to shrink the tubing-although I have used my cigarette lighter-not the one in the car to shrink them.
They may not have been touching-but, you know what-with voltage or vibration they will move, and may only come in contact occassionaly, or permanently, either way you've just found something that can cause an intermittent or worse. Luck
Thanks guys,
i had a bit of another tinker and found all that out... but i appreciate the feedback.
well, im sorta a little bummed at the moment the car is still throwing a code 36..... everything thing seems tip top, the only two things ive left to check or replace are the maf itself(burnoff occurs though) and i guess....... the ecm (gulp) is there a check for that.
ive got a feeling it the ecm.
on thing i have noticed, is that on cold (10 celcius)mornings i will get the code and then later in the day when it is warmer(20 celcius), the code will not appear?????
I really doubt it's your ECM, I'm betting on a bad or corroded connection, or an open circuit (short), before you spend any $$$ make sure you check all the connections-including the ones at the ECM. On another note-I'd rather pay for an ECM than a new MAF-but I don't believe either are defective. Do you have the FSMs or the Helms ? the trouble shooting isn't that bad if you follow it. Another thing is-in all of the trouble shooting guides the ECM is always the last to be suggested-it's a little tougher than most people give it credit for.
