I have an 89 GMC Jimmy with a V-6 in it. My water pump leaked. I replaced it. Now it runs hot at any speed faster than idle. It will idle for quite a while and not over heat. Could I have received a reverse direction pump by mistake? I know they have them for serpentine and v-belt applications. How can I tell?
I'm unsure of the construction of those pumps, but if there is any way possible to put the impeller on backwards then that will cause your problem. Centrifugal pumps running in reverse are only half as good as when they're running in the right direction and I mean that literarlly!
Sounds like you've possibly created an air pocket within the system. Run it at idle with the cap off, squeeze the hoses and watch for air coming out or an eruption.
I feel kinda like a doofus. You would think that I would know not to trust new parts. In this case it was the newly installed thermostat that failed. A failsafe tstat that should not let this happen.
After inspecting both pumps and verifying proper configuration, I reinstalled the pump and RE-checked that *&(%^@%$# Tstat. You guest it, BAD tstat BAD BAD no biscuit. So I replaced the tstat with a different brand fail safe and I am all set.
I just thought a new part is a good part. I should have known better.
