My passenger side window quit working last week. Does anyone know what I should do to diagnos what is causing this problem? The car only has 25000 miles so it should not be worn out. :(
My drivers side power window went out in the down position. I tried the door slamming thing...didn't work. Theory is if the armature and brushes are stuck in one position, then jarring them just a bit might make the motor work again. Like I said didn't work for me...and guess what, it wasn't the switch. So I ordered the entire regulator motor assembly ($209 Ecklers) and replaced it.
Not a hard job, just remember where everything goes back AND particularly make note of the nut positions (2) at the back side of the window as that is the adjustment.
They also sell just the electric motor with gears assembly. I got the old motor assembly off, but for the life of me could not figure how to get a new one on, so ordered the whole preassembled unit. After looking it over, it appears to me that a person could remove the electrical motor (only) from the gear assembly and have the armature turned and then reinstall. Would save a lot of money. You would NOT remove the motor driven gear housing (held on by 3 rivets) from the regulator assembly...just the electrical motor which is held on by 3 allen head bolts.
After the armature was turned, you could reinstall just the armature assembly into the brushes and then install the housing onto the armature. I bet that would work. I betcha...and it'd save a pile of cash.
Note. You'd HAVE to install the armature into the brushes THEN the housing over the armature...only way to get the armature into the brushes. Good luck.
The same thing happened to my driver's side window. A local shop ended up replacing the window motor without replacing the entire regulator/motor assembly... total cost P&L, $250.
Can you still hear the motor running when pushing up/down switch?
My 88 driver side stop working in Dec., a forum member told me that a nut at the albow of the regulator came off after years of vibrations. He took the regulator out, have that elbow spot welded. I was too lazy to take the whole thing out, took the door panel off, went to Sears, bought a short screw and nut, tight it back. Been working fine since (forgot to used loctite) I'll have to go back there some day to loctite it. :yesnod:
