Dash sensor - How do you know if it's working????

On my 93 there is a dash sensor next to the "Trip Monitor". I wanted to see what this sensor did so I placed electrical tape over it, nothing happened. Then I held a halogen flashlight near it, nothing happened.
So, exactly what does this sensor do? How do you check it?

Could it have been installed by someone as an indicater light for something? can you trace the wires from it and find out where they go?

It is to dim the dash lights depending on the abundant light.

To test it during the day put your finger over it and you will see the dash dim down a bit.

The sensor only controls the center digital display (speedo, digital guages) with the lights off. Placing your finger over the sensor in bright daylight should cause the display to decrease in brightness.

At night if you shine a light into it you should see the light in the center square of the dash get brighter.

Ooops, just looked at mine and i have the same thing, but i also have a red L E D just above and to the left of the vent, whats the deal with that i wonder? guess i'll have to trace the wires out.
