For a street car ('96 CE LT1) that is never likely to see track use, what is a good replacement shock? Is the KYB any better than the Bilstein?

I think you'lll have lotsa responses, some of which will be budget-based. Many have reported they're comfortable with KYBs, others say it's too soft. Your car was designed with and for the Bilsteins. There are also Edelbrocks and Konis for your car, as well as some "generics". All are at varying prices for a set of four.

It's your decision but my take on it is do no less than what your car was designed for. You can go further with premium, more purpose-built shocks, but you said you're not going to race it, so why bother?

I recently (<1yr) put Z51 Bilsteins on my (non-Z51) 96. *Dramatically* improved the feel of the car... It's like it went from "Granpa's Buick" to "My CORVETTE!"

www.shox.com

That's where I ordered 'em from - $299 for the set, and I got free shipping. They come with everything you'll need, including new bushings. Super easy to do yourself, as well...
