I have an aftermarket MAF in my 95 (it is a Granatelli) and it does not have screens. I was doing a little bit of throttle body cleaning today and also looked at the MAF. What I see are three thick vertical "wires" with very small resistors that span horizontally between pairs of wires in a few places. The thick wires were blackened so I very, very gently used a small brush--the black stuff came off pretty easily and the "wires" are now a shiny silver.
I guess I should have asked before but I assume it is okay (and advisable?) to do this occasionally?
Get the MAF cleaner sold at PepBoys. It is made specificly for this. I used it on mine and it cured my hesitation/stall problem. A brush? I don't know if I would, those things look pretty delicate. But oh well too late. It still works right?
I did not notice that there was a special cleaner for MAF (I do have a can of the stuff that Pep Boys sells for throttle bodies). The car was running good and seems to run a bit better since I cleaned the throttle body and the MAF wires. These wires look pretty stout but the resistors look very delicate (I stayed away from those).
I'd probably use a cleaner intended for the MAF or at least something intended for electronics. My concern with other cleaners would that they might leave some residue on the wire that might change the measurements.
