Must be a 90.

90 was the first year of the air bag system, and as a result it had some quirks. Mainly being it had no dielectic grease on the sensors to keep them from setting off codes.

This is probably the best write up out there.

To figure out if it's in the steering column or the body mounts you need to do these steps.
1. Disconnect your battery. (Wait 10 minutes before proceeding or you might blow your air bag).
2. Remove the bottom panel from steering column
3. You will see a yellow set of wires for the airbag.
4. Disconnect the connector.
5. Reconnect the battery.
6. Connect a 2 ohm resistor to the connector leading to the mounts (not leading up the steering column).
7. Turn car on. If the problem is in the column the light will now be blank / off. (ie the 2 ohms will make the system look correct from the connector towards the mounts). On mine, the light went out, so the problem was in the steering column.

Why not send him down with a paper clip to the ALDL port and let him pull the codes, instead of ripping off the panel and unconnecting things.

I truly don't think the codes would work. It didn't on mine. It made it look like it was the sensor, when it fact it was the column. There is no code telling you its a column problem.
The airbag sensor is broken up into many pieces. With his problem he needs to "half step" it and find out which half is broke (ie the inside of the car or the outside). The easiest is to start with the column. (I think).

The INFL Rest light is connected to the seat belt light right? Should I try cleaning the grounds to maybe make my seat belt light go off? Sorry for stealing the thread but I've had the same problem for a year.

I'm fighting the same issues here and my '90 won't take an inspection sticker because of it. I'm waiting for the air bag tool to show up from mid-america, hope it works. I had a dealership tell me that the DERM is history, but I don't know how hard they tried to re-ground and reset everything. I'll take any fresh idea I can get.

Adam.

The INFL REST is tied into the seatbelt light as a secondary indicator. If there is a issue with the seatbelt sensor, it will not turn on the INFL REST.

If your DERM has failed, don't expect the dealership to have one. Just start calling salvage yards and hope to find a good one. The 90 is a one year only item.

Adam, don't wait on the tool. Just get a paperclip and ground A-K on the ALDL and read the codes. It's fairly simple and cheap. More than likely it's the sensors on the front frame rails.

To reset the light, it's:
ground for two seconds
unground for two senconds
ground for two seconds
unground for two senconds
