Default 4+3 OD in and out.....

Any ideas where to start looking? my OD when on and cruising will go into and out of OD with even the slightest pedal?

Thanks

if I am not mistaken, there is still a TV cable on the 4+3. I would check that setting... also, make sure the fluid level is good.

I have no clue if this is indicitive of an imminent failure... I expect any number of our 4+3 experts to chime in and tell me my comments are pointless or right on point!

CentralCoaster and Scorp508 are two of the most knowledgeable 4+3 members out there. I suspect Pete K and CFI-EFI know their way around them, too.

The TV was gone in the '86 model year. I would suggest looking at the wiring of the overdrive relay in the engine bay. It is one of 2 identical looking relays (the other is the FP relay) near the firewall kind of between the distributor and brake booster.

The insulation on these wires is nortorious for shrinking back and exposing the wires. When this happens the motion of the car can sometimes cause wires to short across each other causing the condition you are seeing.

Don't think ity has a TV cable (not for certain though) and fluid level was my first suspect since the pan is leaking, however it only has about 30 miles on it since filled it last and it isn't leaking that bad, but thanks will see if anyone else has some insight.

Will check that out, I was just in there re-installing my FP relay yesterday. That may be it.

If the condition started after you replaced the FP relay then I would be highly suspicious of that wiring. We all seem to have to deal with it at some point. Being relatively close to the exhaust manifolds doesn't help it much. Give it a look.

OK I took the front y-pipe and OD pan down yesterday and re-sealed the pan, put it back together and filled and checked for bare wires at the OD relay (none). Took it for a nice long drive today and this is how it went.

OD works good as long as you keep the throttle steady but the slightest movement causes it to do the in/out thing a couple times, then once you get it up to desired speed it is ok again unless you take your foot up to slow down. If you do and then push the throttle again it does it again.

1. Was wondering if the TPS voltage could be off enough to make it think you are at WOT? (need to check that anyways)

2. Could the Hooker front y-pipe be too close and getting the fluid too hot?

3. A sensor on the OD unit going bad?

4. OD switch in the shifter not adjusted right?

It seems like the OD works good when it stays engaged, so I am inclined to believe it is still ok.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

I would take the center conzole bezel off and inspect the switch. It is at the bottom of the shifter. See if any of the wiring has broken through the insulation and is shorting out.

First of all, is the dash indicator light going on and off with the overdrive during this, or does it just stay on?

This will tell you if the problem is upstream or downstream of the relay.

No since the EPROM was re-burned my OD light in the center console doesn't come on anymore, it used to come on when the OD was switched off and off when the OD was switched on, the OD indictor in instrument panel does come on but didn't pat attention to when it comes on and off

Whoaaaaaaaaaaaa nelly. That is not correct. Did the chip burner use a 4+3 EPROM to start with?
