I'll be looking forward to seeing an answer to this after my tranny dying this week. I saw a number of them in Summit's catalog, but was wondering what others have used and how they mounted so it still looks good.

What happened to your tranny that caused it to die?

And, I as well, would like to know how to hook up a tranny temp guage. Especiallly with the heat of Texas/Oklahoma

I switched the stock oil temp gauge to tranny temps. I have a TransBrake and I need to watch tranny temps closely. I put the sender in the line to the cooler with a "T" fitting. Works well!

I've seen/heard of four mounting methods. I think Summit has them all. One mounts in the side of the tranny pan. you have to drill a hole for it.

Another uses a remote filter kit with a spin off filter. It has a plug to mount the temperature sender.

I think B&M (maybe AutoMeter) has a "T" fitting that mounts in the cooler line.

I also was told that there is an existing plug on the side of the transmission that can be used - not sure about this one.

I think the highest temp I've seen someone post was around 240 or so. Gets to be about the same temp as oil if you are doing a lot of hard accelerating.. and especially if you are keeping the torque converter unlocked... building up heat that way.

I put a temp guage in my car for the tranny. I took the pan off and installed a B&M drain kit. It is a double bolt kind of thing that you drill a hole in the pan and bolt it in. I got a tranny temp guage kit from Autometer. It comes with two different size fittings to screw the temp sender into. One of those fittings fits right into the drain kit. I mounted the guage on the front of the dash lip just in front of the left vent opening above the driver information center. It works great. Sorry I don't have any pictures of it yet.

Summit is a mail order racing equipment company - http://www.summitraciing.com

Desired tranny temps are 170-190 F. Vetts run hotter (not good) without a tranny cooler.

How about the stock trans temp sender for the 82 corvette? Should have the right fitings available from Chevy.

170 to 190 are good numbers for a 700R4 w/a quality tranny cooler. Some guys like to measure it @ the pan & some as it comes out of the cooler. the thought coming out of the cooler is that you know that the tranny is not so hot that it is overcoming the ability of the cooler.

Haven't gotten that far yet, I just dropped the exhaust and the trans pan. Had plenty of metal shavings in it.
Hope to have time to drop the tranny by the end of weekend and get a peek inside.

Most gauges are attempting to read the actual working temperature of the fluid. They are installed before the cooler. - either in the pan or on the line to the cooler.

You can put it anywhere you wish, but your temperature readings from the return line will not be comparable to typical readings.

You can determine the proper line by starting the car and feeling the lines. The warmer one is from the tranny to the cooler. The other one is the return from the cooler to the tranny.
