Default dana 36 rebuild question...

I am going to be changing gears, what else should I expect to do in there for a 100000 diff?

Will I be able to just have the gears put in?

Will the posi have to be rebuilt?

Anything else? I have a quote for $400-500 labor for just the gears....

Of course your builder will inspect and advise you, but I would be surprised if he wanted to reuse the bearings and didn't find excessive wear in the post clutches.

will you be racing it? If so, I would invest in a D44... just a thought.

No racing. Wife would sentance me to death by silence... Strictly, "spirited driving ."

CFI-EFI,

I was expecting the bearings. Are the clutches you are refering to in the Posi? The mechanic I was talking to said that if I was going to mess with that, that it would probably be cheaper to buy the whole posi unit rather then messing with setting the friction pads up...

As you can see, I just don't know enough about this but want to make sure I get my money worth...

Thanks!

Mine was completely worn out at 100k miles. I do go to the strip a lot. The clutches are the main component of the posi, along with a pair of conical washers. No setting up involved, but the job is sort of a pain.I had to fabricate a tool needed for the job. I recomend you contact Pat Ikerd. 812-2794828, they specialize in Vette suspension.

"wear in the post clutches" is a typo for "wear in the posi clutches". Sorry, I do that a lot. Even though you see a lot of typos from me, I correct more than get posted. Time is money. Check the cost of the parts, clutches vs the assembly. If he is that slow, maybe a new posi unit is the better buy. Maybe a different mechanic is a better buy.
