Hey I need help finding the right cam for my car. I have an 87 Vette and plan on porting all of the intake parts and installing headers and zero restriction exhaust. I have an Ed Wright chip. I also would like advice on which roller rockers, roller lifters, etc to get. My first purchase will be the cam, though. Then the headers. There are no cats or mufflers right now. Also what would be a good base timing to use, 6 is stock??? Any help from the knowledgeable would be appreciated. Oh and I am on a budget. Also would it work to wire my cold start injector to the other injector and run it to a toggle switch inside for when I anticipate a race?
You've got mail with performance resuls from some L98 mods.
I recently installed Comp Cams ProMagnum 1.6:1 full roller rockers over new 7/16" studs. If you do the non-self aligning, you'll need hardened pushrods and guide plates.
Since my L98 has over 103k miles I also installed Comp Cams #981-16 valve springs with their Ti locks, new keepers and O-ring upper oil seals. These also required a spring shim set to set installed height (and so seat pressure) on the springs.
Start with base timing and adjust to the max with no knock counts or ping. Then fine tune for best HP or trap speed, with no ping of course.
Leave the cold start injector alone and install an AFPR to trim WOT fuel delivery for best HP or trap speed.
Have a cam company help you decide on a cam. You gears, transmission, driving stlye, intake and exhaust all figure in. This isn't the 60s - don't tune a car by throwing timing and fuel at it. Your stock (or Wright) programming may work with a mild cam, but it still won't be optimal. Spend big $ on a custom chip or learn to do it yourself.
