I was browsing through the used vette ads a couple months ago and remember seeing an ad with a D44 diff attached to a modified D36 batwing.
Does anyone know what mods are required to make the D36 batwing accept a D44 differential?
to strengthen a D44 diff, you make a flat plate that goes on where the cover should be, then use a D36 batwing to bring mounting points back to correct location to compensate for added thickness as the d36 is thinner than the d44(use the plate to match drill 4 holes into the D36 batwing)...plate ties the middle of the case together to reduce flex and gives better cap support than D44 cover--less flex improves component life and prevents bind-up and breakage
i had a local machine shop make the plate for my d44 spare diff for $60 (a long time ago) and still have the whole thing (never used it)...i'd be happy to post pics in a couple weeks when my darlings get home from college and show me what i'm doin wrong--i can't seem to do pics for some reason

Interesting. Now it makes sense. What is the required thickness of the plate?
as i remember, the plate was 6061-T651 aluminum, 1/4'' thick...was some discussion about milling it a bit too make sure it was prefectly flat, but i think that was not necessary...this was done about 12 years ago so forgive my senility...gotta go dirt racing right now but i can haul it out and look at it tonight if you want....seems we skipped the milling operation also cause the alum is a problem with the magnetic bed on the blanchard milling machine, brain fade a problem on this tho

Dirt racing, huh? Used to do that myself back in the 80s. Would you be interested in peddling this thing? I'd be interested in anything that would beef my 44 with the new torque I'm getting ready to bolt in.
mmmm...wonder if this would offer any additional strength to the top dollar D44 setups out there, like the car creations case units & such...seems like a fairly cheap way to help keep stuff from breaking...
others need to chime in though...it sounds very doable...and once it breaks i'll have my D36's cover still here to use...which means one less part to buy!
