Default Help needed (and appreciated)

I've spent the past hour or so searching this forum without success. My car displayed the SES light on the way to work this morning. No problems noted except the usual light stumbling/hiccup while idling. How do I read the code (1991)? I have no experience reading the code. Reading the descriptions about the flashing doesn't seem like it would be too hard to figure out. Will the paper clip method work on my car and if so, where is the connector and which pins do I connect? On another topic, do the CDs on Ebay for $6 contain the same good information that the Helm's book does for $95? I also notice that there is a preliminary service manual that sells for around $20 that was replaced with the final revision later. Are those complete enough to be worth buying? Thanks for any and all help.

Is this a first time youve seen it?

Do you have an aftermarket radio?

Yes, it is the first time and sort of no, the owner before me had an OEM Bose unit installed due to it being missing/replaced with aftermarket prior to his ownership.

don't cheap out on the Helm Manual... get the real deal. It will pay for itself!!!!

As for the code, a radio swap will NOT set off the SES. It will set off the SYS on the speedo, tho.

The easiest way to get a code is to stop off at an Autozone or similar and they will read the code for free. Just don't buy anything until you have talked to us.

There are no Autozones in my area. I called one of the local parts stores and he asked which version of OBD1 it was. From what I've read here, my car is pre-OBD1. Is this correct?
Thanks,
Bill

Above the drivers right knee is the ALDL connector.
Looks like this.

[F|E|D|C|B|A]
[G|H|J|K|L|M]

Take a piece of wire and short pin A to Pin G.
Turn the ignition key to run. (Don't start the engine).

Look at the Speedometer LCD and you'll see
the modules displayed and any error codes.
Module 1.0 = CCM
Module 4.0 = ECM
Module 7.0 = Active suspension if equipped.

Post the error code for 4.0 and some one can tell you what the error is.

If you miss the display information, just turn the key off and then back to run. Depending on the outside lighting, you may have to turn on your parking lights to see the display better.

Thank you. I will try this when I get home (hopin' it don't take a tow truck to get there). Probably needs a good Seafoaming.
