Default Coil bind?

When I reassembled my top end I used a set of LT4 springs. I currrently have 1.5 rockers on it and wanted to install a set of 1.6 that I have sitting around. The springs are supposedly good for the lift required as with the 1.6 rockers the lift is only around the 500 mark. With the 1.6 rockers the springs look really tight at full lift though. Of the four coils on each spring, 2 of them touch with no clearance and the other two have less than 10 thousands between them. I am thinking perhaps the installed height is a little tighter than it is supposed to be on these.
So is this acceptable or not? Is it too close for comfort?
Thanks,
Roy

The LT4 spring is good to .525 lift when installed at the correct height, which is 1.78. Is your installed height correct ?? Any pics ??

Agent, As well as I can measure it with my available tools all I can say for certain is that it is close. The machinist says it is right. (for what that is worth) I have no pics as it is currently assembled and running with the 1.5.
I know that they are supposed to be good to .525. My concern is how close they seem to be when using a feeler gauge to actually measure the clearance at full lift.
I think I gave myself less grief when I used to just bolt things together rather than actually checking them!

I know that even if installed at the correct height, the LT4 spring is right at the safe limit for bind when using the Hotcam w/1.6 rockers, which is .525" lift of course. (This is why I like a better spring for such set-ups) At .500" though, you should not be having these problems. There definitely should not be any coils touching, ever! I just can't think of anything other than an incorrect installed height that could be causing this.

Based on what I measured it would be right about .525 where they all stacked up. But based on what you said coil bind is defined as when any of the coils touch, not when they all touch and leave no more room at all for compression?

The bind limit is before they touch. There's a generally agreed upon minimum gap but the exact number escapes me right now. I'm pretty sure it's somewhere in the .040-.060" range though.

Ok, lets assume then that the machinist set them up a little too tight. I am sure I could pull the heads and he would fix them no problem. But thats a major PITA. Does anyone have a reccomendation for a spring I could swap in that would easily handle this very mild 212/218 .500 camshaft?
Thanks
Roy
