Help,
got a tranney problem. once in awhile my transmission slips from 1st. to 2nd. gear let up on it and it catches. Took it out on the interstate yeaterday and was doing about 60 mph, decided to floor it to burn the carbon out and it slipped again finely caught and i could hear a quick clanking noise let up on it and it stopped. Any ideas? Is it time for an tranney rebuild? or just a minor tune up? Its a '91 coupe.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks pete, if anybody knows about trannys i know it would be you. Been reading all your posts, your very up on tranmissions, not what i wanded to hear but i quess its gota be done. thanks again.
The reason I jumped right to the worst case is because the foward clutch pack is used in those gears. It is amazingly durable compared to the 3/4 clutch pack. I often get into a trans that was rebuilt once or twice and stiil contained the factory frictions . A misajusted tv cable or governor problem will often tear out the 3-4 clutches only. More than likely, a small lip seal is simply dried out and leaking fluid pressure causing the slip. Either way, unfortunately, it needs to be torn down.
I do not know the rates in your area but in Northeast Pa, $1,000-$2000 is typical. The price varies because of labor and upgrades. Most shops here charge $350 or so to remove and replace. Torque converter can vary from $150-$850. Stock reman floats around $150-200 depending on quality. The high dollar stuff (converter)is certainly not needed on a driver, but on a racer. I do them on the side for buddies and charge $350 for the labor to rebuild. "Standard" stock type parts usually add $250-300 to the bill. Most guys add a new heavy duty(beast) reaction shell because they are weak from the factory. This is $70 well spent. A heavy duty 3/4 clutch pack is also another $70 well spent. Even on a driver. It beefs up a weak link. If you need advise, just ask. Happy to give it.
Sooooo, one more question, what are we looking at $1,500 to $2,000 for a rebuild?
That is on the high side for stock rebuild. $1500 can buy alot of transmission, if you find the right guy.
I spent a few days last week in Spring Hill. Beautiful area!
