Since my rear y-pipe is rusted considerably I am thinking about putting true duals on. Will I need a new chip? What should I expect in terms of power and possible codes? Thanks in advance.
We have done it many times on 85-89 mass air cars with no issues. When stock, my car picked up an honest 3 tenths and 3 mph in the 1/4 mile. They have been on the car for 15 years with no side effects.
Comes on what year vette you have, and what your idea of true duals is.
(Is it no CAT(s), no from or rear 'Y' pipes straight tubes under car and no mufflers?)
On the '85 you can pickup an easy 15-20HP just by getting rid of the pos stock mufflers. Getting rid of the 'Y' and single CAT should be good for another 15HP easily..
If it's a later L98 , you have 2 Pre-Cats which rob soem HP too I think.
On an LT1 thought you will not gain as much, as the LT1s have pretty good exhaust already.. I'd say maybe 10-15HP without cats and true duals..
I was planning on putting the kit from Mid America on it. No cats whatsoever with my flowmasters. My main concern was with the car throwing codes and "little" problems here and there as the result of it! By the way, I have an early '86. Thanks!
I have an 89 with true duals. A little too true. No cats and no X pipe. I am going to install an Xpipe in the next couple months, as regulating pressure on both sides is important for flow.
With the trur dual the sound is pretty harsh when accellerating. It sounds like the monsters at the drag strip. This is cool at first but when you are cruisin' somwhere at that resonance for a while, and your ears feel a little funny when you get there, it aint so cool anymore.
X pipe should correct this.
with headers, no cats, runners, and hypertech chip I am laying down 240 hp and 345 torque at the wheels.
I have true dual exhaust with headers and no cats. No codes but as has been mentioned the resonance even with an x-pipe at certain RPM's gets a little trying.
