Default PS Hydroboost, steering Snafu! help

OK all you smart guys. We have a C-3 (I know - but the C-3 guys are a little dense on this stuff) that we have put in a C-4 style PS Pump with the remote reservoir. Also running off that is the Hydroboost unit (we have a little cam in there!) we put in a revalved low volume pump to stop foaming on the track - and put a remote PS fluid cooler in also)
we also have the steeroids R&P steering setup on it!

So we have it out on the new larry Miller track in Tooele Utah. 4.5 miles - a really nice setup! and anytime we turn into a corner - it's like for a split second the steering is locked up - then it releases and works just fine. And going into a corner - hit the brakes - for the first split second - no brakes - the petal is like a rock - then just as pucker power supercharges your brakefoot the braking comes on normally - usually locking up the wheels because you were pushing so hard initially.

Any ideas? my brother would greatly appreciate any help - as he is running out of clean underwear!

I have a Hydroboost from Hydratech that I have yet to install on my C4.
If you don't mind my lack of actual experience, I'd like to offer some
thoughts and suggestions.

Was there a problem with this setup foaming the PS fluid, or is it a
case of making multiple changes at once that led to a switch to
the low volume pump in conjunction with the HB and the rest of the
combo? Who provided the low volume pump and are you confident
it is producing the advertised volume and pressure?

If you told me you made multiple changes at once, that only the
steering balked and that the brakes were fine. I'd suspect that
the new pump didn't have enough volume for the new combination.

But I'm puzzled that the brakes are an issue because the HB has
an accumulator that is intended to provide a 2-4 pedal pump reserve
of boost in the event of a PS failure (pedal reverts to unboosted
when the reserve runs out). I wonder if there is inadequate
pressure to fully or partially charge the accumulator?

Another thought is that if the pump is struggling, trail braking during
turn-in could create a situation where there isn't enough pump for
both steering and braking?

It may be of interest that I exchanged mail over the winter with Paul
at Hydratech about me switching to a lower volume pump on my C4.
My reasoning was that the C4 pump and the firewall dash design are
said to conspire to create more cabin noise than is the case with the
C3 earlier pump design. Paul recommended that I stick with the
standard pump
and follow through with my plan to use non-stainless
braided hose, saying that the hose had a good chance of damping
the slightly elevated C4 pump noise that otherwise gets transmitted
through the stainless braid hose. Relevant? You can be the judge.

I will say that I've found Paul at Hydratech to be very helpful and
approachable both by mail and by phone.

Can you cap off the HB and see whether the steering issue goes away?

How big a deal would it be to switch to a standard volume pump and
test?

well the hydroboost and original PS worked fine together with the old setup until we got into it hard - then we had foaming issues - we went to the larger pulley but we couldn't keep it tight - so we switched to a remote reservoir setup. . Our thought is that switching back to a normal pressure PS unit may solve the problem - Right now I'm waiting for a callback from turnone pump to see if they can shed any light on the issue.

The pump was bought out of summit or jegs - can't remember which. If the pump was put together wrong the valves off kilter - something like that may cause the problem.

I think we added to much stuff at once. The cooler and the lines feeding it are more volume - and more stuff to go wrong - so now we need to work back and figure it out!

I'll give the guys you suggested a call - can't hurt to pick as many brains as we can!

There's the pressure drop from the 45º, 90º and any 180º fittings, too

Hope to hear back about your findings.

Do you mean Carl Johansson's entire install or just of the booster?

To just to see the Hydroboost, go to this thread and scroll down one

Default Volume issue!

Both Paul at hydroboost and the guy at turnone agree that it is a volume issue - The easiest solution - just drill out the outlet orrifice to 1/8 inch. we will do that and report back!!!

thanks for the input - turns out Paul knows one of my brothers (hell everybody probably knows 1 of my brothers - I have 6 of em!)- what a small world - and he told me really embarassing stories about my brother too - now I have some ammo!

Thanks again guys
