Default Ready for performance mods on 90 L98 - advice?

I have a 1990 L98 Automatic. It is my daily driver. I just got bad news about it - so I'm turning it into good news.

The bad news is the Fuel injectors are shot and a head gasket leaks. The dealer was insane with the quote to fix it (I could almost buy a new engine).

This sounds like the time for some upgrades!

I read Vader's site on mods and have some ideas and would love comments and suggestion. I am not a mechanic and will be having a professional do the work.

I would like to see 350HP or so (and lots of torque - I love torque).

So far I see that I will need to replace the cam, intake, exhaust, and doing some head work.

I'm thinking I will go with Hooker headers and turn the car into a true dual setup with Corsa mufflers and some form of high flow cat.

Vader seems to like the superram and I like his reasoning. Any recommendations where to buy (the intake or any of the parts for that matter)?

Since I need new injectors anyway - should I go with 24# or 30#? It looks like I'll also want to add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

He suggested the Accel219 cam for this intake - sound good?

Since I have '113 heads (that need to be resurfaced anyway) I was planning on having them ported and keeping them. People seem to like them.

O.K. - what did I miss? Should I rethink any parts of this? My budget is flexible (the sky is not the limit, however) and I want a quality, drivable car when I am done.

Tuning - the combination you describe will require that the PROM be re-calibrated, or tuned, to match your set up and run the engine correctly. If you do not plan on doing it yourself, talk to a tuner FIRST about your plans before buying anything. There are a few supporting tuners on this forum.

24 lbs injectors should be fine, but that is really for you and your tuner to decide.

Who will be doing the mechanical work? If you are already into the heads, you should freshen up the bottom end, and if you are doing that, think about going with a 383 - you'll LOVE the torque

If its staying as a 350, then 24lb injectors would work well. 1.6RR for the heads and get a good tuner and engine-related stuff should be done.

After that you will need to think about the torque converter.

Your best bet is to find the SR used on ebay. Any of the bases work and I would match the ports to the heads after those are done.

With an automatic, I'd recommend the Lingenfelter 74211 cam with 1.6 RR's in lieu of the 74219, particularly if you want more torque. With the SR its a super combo. Factory heads will have to be machined to accomodate the valve lift on either cam.

I used the COMPCAM 249-08-422-8 with my SR and 113 heads - I love it. No traction problems at the traffic lights and the power toasted the tranny after two days of tuning the ECM.

Default Great suggestions!

I do not have a tuner in mind. Suggestions for one would be appreciated. I am in York, PA (not too far from the vette show location in Harrisburg) if they would need to be local.

This discussion has added some thoughts for me. How much of a bigger deal would it be to do the bottom end at the same time (aka - 383)? I do not have a good sense of the cost of much of this stuff, so I assumed that it would add quite a bit to the bottom line expense of the project.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions so far.
