Default Brass plug where temp sensor should be

Hi all,

I have a 1994 Z28 which I had to replace the heads on as the last owner mollested all of the the manifold bolt holes. Anyway. I bought a set of used heads off of ebay that were supposedly off of a 1995 lt1 corvette and had no problems installing them accept for one thing.

Where the temperature sensor was on my old heads there is now what seems to be a brass "plug" which has a hole that is perfectly square and measured with a micrometer seems to be 5/16". I have tried ratchets of sizes 3/8" and 1/4" and neither fit. And no the hole is not hex, it is square - four sides.

I assume I need to get that thing out of there somehow so I can screw in a temp sensor. If anybody has any ideas on what/why that thing is there and how to get it out....preferably some type of tool I would be highly appreciative. Thanks a bunch.

I ran into this problem too...looked all over the place for the right tool...i called my auto tech neighbor over, and he went back to his garage, used a grinder to cut down an old tool he had laying around to the correct size and had it removed before i could blink twice.

When I installed the JET Performance fan switch in my '90 I had to remove a square plug in the drivers side cylinder head. I went to NAPA and they suggested buying a 3/8" drive extension that was on the sale rack and grinding it down to fit, worked like a charm!

Happy Wrenching,

Adam.

PS, with tools of course, but have a beer too!

Why not just extend the sensor wire to the opposite head?

I have a open end adjustable wrench which I then put a pipe over the end to give me additional leverage for special times. Tighten it as tight as you can get it. I hope you don't snap the sucker off, it sounds like its been in there a long time. In the mean time I would start putting some WD-40 on it for a day before I really attacked it.

I think I have seen sockets or tools that receive those square heads. You might check locally to see if you can find something.
