Default 89 Digital Cluster Problems...

Anyone have any idea which leads pass through the firewall to feed the cluster?? Dash page says possible bad ground (both directions lit and high beam indicator lit) and it says connector behind the drivers side head... Tons of wires down there and no clue which is which...

Anyone had and fixed this one??

Those lights stay lit because of an open ground and the cluster ground current flows through the lamps to ground lighting them up all the time.
See http://www.batee@unr.edu for help. I think the open ground is usually on the circuit board not the external wiring.

89 Cluster grounds were changed from the earlier years. Pin D1 grounds at the passenger footwell. Pin D3 (which in earlier years went through the firewall at Connector C100 - driver's side - and then to the engine), splices into the ECM harness ground which enters the engine mid Firewall - closer to the passenger side. Pin D1 is black and it joins a boatload of splices before reaching the footwell, so if you suspect that it's splice is faulty, simply run a direct ground from the Pin to any good chassis ground and see if that fixes the problem. Pin D3 is blackwhite and is also the ground for the ambient override sensor (closed below 32 degrees and I've never figured out what this does though I believe it may have something to do with Cruise Control). Again, try a direct route to a good chassis ground and see if that corrects the problem. As a side note, I've seen it recommended that both grounds be cut and spliced together with the theory being that at least one of the grounds was good. It came about because the ground at Connector C100 was subject to corrosion from moisture. Chevy apparently realized this for the 89 year and changed the routing to the ECM harness.
