Ok so I just have a brainstorm (thanks Jack_leg your post got me thinking). I decided to pull the battery connection from the distributor and see if the noid light showed anything...it didn't. I know most of you will say DUH but hey that's how you learn. The real breakthrough was realizing that the battery connector to the distributor did not have the plastic retaining clip. It had broken off. When I finished the test I plugged the connector back in and it fired. However I had a dim display for about 15 seconds. I guess I will put the car up on jack stands tomorrow and trace out that wire. My theory is that either the broken retainer clip, or a short in the wire after that is causing the problem.

Sounds like you've narrowed it down. Good luck. If this doesn't correct the problem you may want to ohm your pickup coil...remember to wiggle the wires if you do, that's part of the test..don't remember what it's supposed to read, but it's in your factory service manual.
