Default 92 AC question

AC seems to be discharged.
Serpentine belt seems to be rubbing on the solid lines coming from the compressor. Haven't looked real close, but it may have rubbed a hole in the solid lines. Compressor does run, just seems to have no refridgerent in the system.

So do I pull the hard lines from the compressor, make sure there is no hole, bend the lines a little so they don't rub, reattach (is there a gasket I need to replace?)? Then get a R134a conversion kit and charge it up and pray for the best?

Or
Do I get all new parts and just replace it all?

It getting hot and I need to fix the AC soon.

You first need to get a real good look to see if there is really a hole in the line. That will change your whole approach. If there is a hole, that line will have to be replaced, the sysyem evacuated and charged up. You mention R134 which was not standard till 1994 I beleive. Did you do a conversion or is it the original R-12 system. If you are thinking about a conversion, that's a whole project.

If the line is not broken, you can try putting in some freon and make sure it's not coming out of the line. If your OK, charge it up. But first find out what the problem is first. If you don't have gauges, most A/C repair stations will check the freon at not charge and you will not have to wonder about guessing. You can have freon in the system and have no cold air.

Tom - is right, the compressor would not run unless the cycling switch made contact by some system pressure. In that case charge it up, probably needs some freon, check for leaks.

If the system were discharged, the compressor would not run unless you jumper the pressure sensor.

The system has a pressure sensor that will not allow the compressor to run if the system doesn't have a sufficient charge.
