Default first post and question about 84 instrument cluster...problems

Hey guys, this is my first post here.
My father in-law has an 84. The instrument cluster is not working correctly. Lights were randomly flashing but no information was reading correctly.

Upon removing the dash and cluster, I found that someone had already worked on this cluster before. there were wires coming to the cluster that were not supposed to be there. One of them had power to it. so basically someone had "jimmy rigged" the thing. I sent it off for repair. the guy said he repaired it and it works great.

now when I plug it back into the car there are no back lights at all. It looks like the left hand side (speedo) may be working, just not lit up. the right hand side (tach) is not working at all. I believe the guy that he repaired the cluster....so it must be another problem.

Question is: what else could be bad for the cluster not be to working. Is there some kind of instrument cluster sending unit that could have gone bad? or what else should i check?

thanks

Could be the ground connection for the cluster, i belive it is behind the panel down by the drivers foot.

I agree check the grounds first. Also look at the solder joints. They have a tendency to crack which is another common problem and sometimes hard to find.

Damn, I hate it when other people get into something ahead of me. Then I have to trouble shoot the problems they added. I used to see that in electronics alot. People bringing in a stereo, all apart in a box. I started turning that stuff down. Somebody has screwed around with your wiring. What a pain in the A- -. If I were there I would help you out, but I'm not, and you'll get it anyway. Good Luck...

thanks guys. ill check the ground... so down by the drivers foot?

i think the solder joints should be ok because the guy that repaired it said it works great when he plugs it in.

so there is no kind of sending unit?

Seems to me it should have come back to you, repaired. Isn't that what you sent it in for ?
