Differential Leak - need advice
The differential on my 87 coupe is leaking grease on the exhaust pipe. :confused: What needs to be removed to fix problem. Can the diff cover be removed and re-sealed? Any tips appreciated. Also....any special tools needed for "weekend hobby" mechanic? Anyone know approx cost at Dealer for repair.

Can you tell where it is leaking from? That will determine the cost. If its the pinion seal, you might be able to do/get it done fairly reasonably. If it's the side yokes or cover seal the axle should come out of the car. It's not really that hard, worst part is the C-beam nuts and bolts. If you can remove/reinstall the axle, you will save a nice pile of change. I probably spent about an hour to hour and a half after the C-Beam was out. Just be careful if you take the trailing arms loose at the chassis brackets as the nuts can fall in to the frame. I'm still trying to figure out how to get that one out of there. :rolleyes:

Thanks for the reply. Leak seems to be on rear on housing, not front near driveshaft. Drips on pipe and smells "real" bad. Seems to be losing a lot of grease. Looked for crack, but did not see one in housing. Possibly cover is loose or :rolleyes: . I did not want to start and not be able to complete repair in garage.
