Engine Jerks then clunk when engaging reverse or drive?
This has happened ever since i purchased the car and its driving me nuts. When i pull the shifter (automatic) into reverse or drive the engine will jerk then you hear a clunk with almost a loose metal tinging sound. My only idea is that ther are bad u-joints somewhere. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. -joe
Could be anything in the drive train from the symptoms you describe. What's your idle speed? If it's too high it will make more noise ( I assume it's an A4) There is a procedure for setting base idle and TPS setting that must be followed in the Tech Tips section. Do you have any history of service or repairs? Getting it on a rack and looked at by a good shop would seem the next logical step. Let us know how it goes.
taking it into a shop that was reccomended to me by an avid firehawk owner who had work done there. i was told they specialize in performance vehicles and were honest. will post when im told whats wrong.
My first thought is U-joints.
Have you experienced any of those symptoms as you approach a stop sign or traffic light...such as a clunk...clunk...clunk sound?
If so...even a better chance of the problem being U-joints.
the clunk sound seems to come from closer to the back end. but there is a constant clicking sound comming from under the drivers seat area. when im stopping i do not hear that noise. sometimes just driving i can hear a loose metal tinging sound from bumps in the road though. i feel now there may be more than one problem.
well that mechanic couldnt figure it out but did feel the annoying ticking (with every rotation) i was hearing was comming from the rear differential and does not know where the clunk is comming from. so he reccomended me to another guy (larry) whos been in the business for a while and runs Corvette and Performance Specialties in East Amherst, NY. It will be there till tomorrow afternoon when he calls with his diagnosis. Ill keep you all posted.

I had the same problem. It was a large clunky metal on metal sound, that happened when engaging drive and reverse, but it miraculously disappeared after a few days. I thought it could be my cat. conv. I do, however, have a very slight, hard to hear, clicking sound coming from what I beleive is my pass rear wheel area. Could be unrelated.
Yes, the loud, clunky sound went away on it's own.
My 85 has been doing this since I got it almost 9 years ago.I was told that a few years later this was corrected at the factory and this is common for early C4s.
I had (and still have) clunk sounds on my 95 automatic--sometimes when starting off from a stop (even under mild starts). It seems to happen just at the instant I step on the gas from a stop and it also sometimes happens when the car shifts from 1-2 or 2-3. I have had this almost since the car was new. Once when the sounds were a bit louder than normal I brought it to the dealer (who though it might be u-joints) but when I got it back, the noise was mostly gone and there was no charge. I asked what they found and he said the guy that worked on it just tightened the wheel bearings a bit.
ok so here is what the second (corvette specialist) mechanic told me. the spindles needed to be replaced and thats where the clunk and loose metal sounds are comming from. the clicking may be unrealated, he wont know until he gets the rear end apart. so a week and $640 from now i should have more information. ill report back when i do.

It has been said on the forum that if the spindles get a little rust on the splines that it will cause a metallic sound. Most have just pulled the spindles apart and put grease on them and reassembled fixing the problem. I am having a problem understanding how the spindles could be bad. U-joints at the wheel I understand but the spindle won't wear just break. If the car clunks when going into to gear I think you may have two problems. The clunk could be alot of things. Could be a little as u-joints to as much as too much back lash in the diff. Just guessing without hearing what the car is doing. My car is clunking when putting in gear but I have a shift kit. I am taking it apart on Sunday to find the issue.
thanks for the info. after he replaces the spindles i will see if the truely fixes the clunk sound. if not, then he needs to find the "real" problem and not charge me for fixing something that wasnt broken. ill report back with the skinny on thursday/friday.
pads were replaced a month ago. but the sound was there before and after and ive put a good couple thousand miles on since the new pads so i dont think its that in my case.
ok, spindles in and the does make less noise and jerks much less as well. the mech showed me where the spindles had rusted over and there was a lot of metal on metal contact leaving metal gouges behind. i still have this annoying clicking/ticking sound with every rotation. sounds almost exactly like a bicycle while coasting. a buddy of mine thought maybe it was the speed sensor, anyone have an idea?
