I know this subject is always beat to death :smash: but what upgrades should I make, if any, to my 90'. All I can confirm at this time is that it has Accel 8.8 plug wires on it and a stock cap and coil. Dont know what plugs are in it.... What can I expect from any changes ?? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Ya know, every one here seems to put down the MSD boxes. Every Winston Cup car has two under the hood. The're not so much for WFO, but to keep the plugs clean during pit stops and cautions. I'm a believer.
The other point is to use a cap and rotor that have brass posts inside (Accel and others). There is also a thing called a Dyna Module that increases dwell time in the distributor. It replaces the ignition module. I haven't got one yet, but it sounds good. The caveat here is that any non stock part is subject to failure at a greater rate than GM. But then again some are better than stock.
Good luck,
DON M
MSD definatley is a cost effective way to upgrade your ignition, plus have plenty to handle any future upgrades, i know it will probably come up so i have taken a picture of how i mounted mine. It was mounted up under the passanger side headlight i will post some pics when i get home
For spark plugs, just cut back the electrodes on AC Delcos and with the HyperTech setup and good wires, gap em to about .045"-.050" (10 HP gain, better gas mileage, lower emissions and it's free...such a deal).
who in the world would put down msd? they have a great kit for the HEI with a 6al box, coil, wire & harness. helps the revs over 5000 quite a bit. also everyone has there 2 cents on plugs and mine go to bosch...they are BY FAR my favortive plug, taylor & msd are the favs for wires.
Thtas Great..... for when you need it. Now lets just upgrade the TPI so that it breaths over 4800. :D I do hear that the MSD smooths out the idle, is that true?

Why do you think they have two? They go out when unexpected. Now I know they have them set to different rev limits, but how often to you hear the driver radio in that the ignition is cutting out and he is switching to the back up?
i haven't had any problems with mine and have it wired up so that if it does fail all i have to do is change a few wires and it will be running off the stock ignition again, takes 5 minutes in the dark :D
