Coil Driver
Well, car wouldn't run. Replaced Optispark. Ran for one day Still not running. Missed Carlisle. :mad
Now I get, I believe, a code 52. Manual says a code 52 turns off fuel system, clear code, crank on car for fifteen seconds, code should reset, if not, dreaded intermitent problem.
Well, code did not reset and car doesn't start. Seems like it tries a little, but will not run.
You guys know your stuff, what do you think???
Any help greatly appreciated :seeya
coil driver, do you mean the spark control module in the distributor? If so, some auto parts places will test them for you. If you can smell raw fuel in the exhaust while someone is cranking, then you likely have fuel being delivered.
You need some tools to diagnose this. A fuel pressure gauge to see if the fuel runners have the correct pressure , a timing light to see if you have high voltage and at the right time and consistent. In a non optispark C4, the distributor has a pickup coil, a spark control module, a spark coil, a rotor , and a distributor cap , all or some or one of which can prevent spark and therefore
starting. Each of these components needs to be checked to determine if they are contributors to the problem.
Man, do I wish I had a normal distributer. I would throw it out in a heartbeat for an msd. When it did run for a day, it ran great. Started up several times and everything. Next day, nothing, except a code 52.
Oh well. I know that the spark modules in the older hei's would shut down the motor in the middle of the road. I just wonder if the module next to the coil does about the same thing? I think I saw an aftermarket replacement to change out the whole thing. Hmmm
