Odd? halfshaft question
Just received a pair of C4 halfshafts I purchased on ebay. On both shafts there is a small hex drive screw (similar in appearance to a set screw) threaded into the side of the shafts. I don't see these on other C4 shafts I have laying around. My only thought about the reason for these would be to possibly allow backflow gas purging during a welding process, but again, why haven't I seen this before on the other halfshafts? I would appreciate it a bunch if someone could clear this up for me.

That thought also entered my mind, but the screws are so darn small(in size and weight), and they're in almost identical positions on each shaft. I'm just baffled here.
Thanks for your input here. I appreciate your taking the time to contribute to the discussion.

I measured the distance from the screws to the yoke welds, and it's 2 1/2 inches on one, and three inches on the other. My uneducated guess is that the yoke probably doesn't extend quite that far in (subject to correction, of course). Nevertheless, I certainly appreciate your input on this.
69427, Some time back I read a TSB for 1984 vettes that had to do with fixing driveline noise by drilling a hole and spraying in some heavy lube or rust proofing.
I read the hole thing years ago but, all I could find was on this site, go down to tsb #84-60: http://misterbill.homeip.net/vette/1984_TSB.htm
It states: Half-Shaft and propshaft clinking noise coming from the yokes and tubes of the half-shafts and propshafts corrected by spraying LP53 heavy duty rust inhibitor into the half shaft and propshaft.
This might explain the drilled and taped holes, to allow access inside to spray in the gunk?

I looked at the TSB you mentioned. That must be the reason for the screws. I would have never guessed that. Thank you very much for your time and research looking into this.
