Default Gas guage problem

Looks like it is stuck. I filled up a couple of time coming back from carlisle and it does not want to come down past 3/4 or so.
Anybody ever have this problem and what is the fix??

I would say that it is probably the sender unit that is contained in the tank. Easy to replace, but large $$$$$$$$$ :(

The Last Detail is a good source.

Hi Kevin,

pretty common problem with vette (GM) gauge.

i'll assume that the '92 wiring scheme is colored the same way as the '89.

my gauge had been reading high for a while. at one point, it read full scale constantly so i decided to finally tackle the level sensor. very easy job.

the Fuel Lever Sender's connector is behind the rubber 'boot' at the gas filler spout - you can test your sensor there easily.

if you jumper the Purple wire to the Black wire and try the ignition ON, the guage should read zero. if so, there is definitely a connection problem wiith the Fuel Level Sender.

the Fuel Level Sender, when disconnected from the vehicle, should read 90 ohms in full position, and near zero ohms at empty (measure between Purple wire and Black wire).

make sure you disconnect the connector from the vehicle harness so that you don't damage the electronic dash with the ohmmeter!

there is a really simple resistance slider (potentiometer) attached to a pivoting float/arm. REALLY simple.
on mine the copper 'rivet' that slides across the resistive element had a bad (high resistance) contact with the little tab that it is mounted on. i had to 're-squash' the rivet to make it tighter in its mooring.
and, whalla, she back in action.

the gauge/pump assembly slips out from the top, at the fuel filler nozzle.
simply remove the Flip Lid bodypanel and the Rubber Boot from around the filler spout, and the rest is obvious.

feel free to e-mail or Instant Message for any clarification :seeya

let me say that in another way:

DO NOT connect an Ohmmeter to any electronic device (Instrument Display / Climate Controls / Stereo etc). Ohmmeters use their own battery power and can destroy electronic elements

- the Fuel Level Sender is not electronic, just a big clunky wire.
- but, the dash Instrument display IS and can be fried quickly!

SLEV89,

You should post this under Tech Tips.

My gauge reads FULL-3/4-Reserve about half of the time the rest of the time it seems to work nomally.

Looks like I'll be pulling the sending unit.

Thanks,

my 96 read full all the time until I disconnected the battery for awhile, that fixed it.
