Low Budget Performance Mods
I own an 88 35th anniversary vette with a 4 speed auto L98...I am looking to give this thing a little more power but not break the bank. I dont have much experience modding this type of engine, and I know a lot of you do. Are there any mods that I would possibly be able to do at home? The car has 143k and I just bought it. It runs strong but has noticable engine gunk and wear. I cleaned the throttle body because I was told that would help with throttle response. Also, I heard about this thing called a "frisbee"...I am not sure if it is on my motor or where it is.
Lastly, what are typically the best mods for this type of engine. I have heard that adding an intake does not make a large performance increase, while headers or a new cam shaft will help greatly.
Any responses are greatly appreciated, please help me get this thing pullin harder
. Thanks

Okay! I a '90 Vette w/L-98 the difference between the two is yours has a Mass Air Flow Sensor the 90 and 91 have a Speed Density Unit instead(No Mass Air Floww Sensor) but a Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor that sends the info to the Computer(ECM)
What you can do: 1st go on www.tpis.com and purchase their TPIS Insider hand book and it explains a lot about performance upgrades as well as many performed and graphed tests with proven parts.(this is one of the sites you can use to fullfill all your needs)
Here are a couple more: www.ecklers.com www.madvet.com
www.zip-products.com www.exoticmuscle.com shop these sites and you will become real familiar with your Vette and here on the forum there are a great bunch of guys.
Now this is what I have done with mine so far: (in order)
1.K&N Open Air Lid W/K&N Element
2.Highflow catback muffler system(many to choose;ask forum members)
3.160' Thermostat
4.Low Temp Fan Switch(goes in side of head/drivers side)
5.Airfoil(many will dispute this but I will take aerodynamic flow over flat)
6.Coolant Bypass Kit(at the bottom of Throttle Body;can make own)
7.New Plugs(Bosch plus two's many have their fav.'s, just ask around)
8.Moroso Spiral Core Plug Wires(Summit Racing)
9.Hypertech Coil(53,000 volt to stock 38,000)and New Cap(Summit)
10.Fuel Pressure Regulator(many to choose from) set at 47psi
11.24lb Bosch Injecters(stock is 21lb)
12.52mm Throttle Body(You will have to port the Intake Plenum to match the 52mm, I did it myself, it is aluminum, you can do it too! ) If you want to see what it looks like go to www.corvetteplenum.com
13.MAT Senser Relocate(Manifold Air Temp. Senser at bottom of plenum)
14.Hypertech Thermomaster Chip(Many have their choices there are custom ones that can be done by Ski_it-down or PCM for Less and many others;ask around, I will be having a custom one made for my Vette soon and will sell the Hypertech)
15.2200-2500 Custom Built Stall Converter(it is being installed this tuesday)
16.Bumped base timing up to 8' degrees advance(ask how to do this it's different than your regular non-computer cars)
All these things I do myself and so can you!
I am doing some other mods soon!
1.I have a Big Mouth Manifold(with extra porting already done) and Lg Tube ASM Runners( www.asm.com Arizona Speed and Marine) these will flow a TON more than stock, the stock system is INADEQUATE and do not flow enough. There are many different manifolds to choose from as well as runners, again continue to ask around and see what others are using.
2.Highflow 2 1/2" pre-cat eliminater Y pipe(fromMidAmerica;www.madvet.com) and a Highflow Catylitic Converter from TPIS and I am also goin to install two 2 1/2" Cut-outs on the Y pipe from Summit Racing.
3.Pully Reduction Kit from TPIS w/belt
4.1.6 Roller Rockers
5.Eventually new Cam(not sure which one yet but it will be from GM;integrity) and 113 CNC Heads from TPIS(these are Vette heads so I can keep it's integrity) and some others eventually as well.
You can e-mail me or PM me about any mods I have done and how I did it or why I did any time. EVERY MOD I HAVE DONE MY VETTE HAS LOVED IT! and can feel it; soon I will have it Dyno'd and I will take it to the track at LACR(2 mi's from the house)
I strongly suggest you get that book from TPIS as soon as you can(do one day if you can)
Just take it slow and have fun and always ask as many QUESTIONS as possible.
I hope this helps!(Please fill out your profile!)
AND YOU MUST READ VADERS SITE!!! IT WILL HELP YOU!!!
Thanks, Matt
