Default ? for Pete K

Pete, I know that you're the trans. man so if you could answer a ? I would greatly appreciate it. I was just on a run about 50 miles down the road at somewhat high speeds. I was using 2nd and 3th gear alot as this was in the hills and would drop down to climb up and to slow when going down. Came to the top of a hill and floored it to start a high speed section and poof smoke billowing out the back. Pulled over and trans. fluid on the ground.. not much but some. Had it towed back home and jacked it up and couldn't see any source of leak. Dropped the dust cover and it was dry. Checked the pan bolts and while not loose definitely not tight. Snugged them up and started the car and ran it thru the gears..no leaks. Took it out and pounded the snot out of it and no leaks. I guess my ? is, is the pan itself pressurized and could this have been just the fluid being forced past the loose gasket? I can't get it to do it again, but I'm nervous about taking it on a long cruise . TIA, Robert sorry about the long post

Robert, the fluid likely pushed out the pump vent on the top of the trans case. When you fill it back up, make sure the fluid is in the lower 1/3 of the xxxx area when warmed up after a short ride. If you topped it off recently, or air temp was unusually high the day it happened, heat probably caused the fluid level to rise, then it pushed it out like it was supposed to do. Do not panic yet.

Thanks Pete. I might have overfilled it the last time I added some and I know that using 2nd and 3rd gears will heat it up more than OD, so I will check the level and NOT add too much. It's hard to tell on the dipstick sometimes and I think that it makes for under and overfilling it. Thanks for the quick response and the good info as usual. Robert
