Default Headers in CA ?

Are headers legal in CA?
If so, will the car pass smog? ( 1995 A4 ( LT1) )

Does anyone have the short headers like the ones listed in Ecklers,
made Hooker?

Thanks,

N7

Hooker and JBA short-tube headers are both smog legal.

I have SLP Shorties. Have had it smogged twice, and they never said anything.

I have the hooker shorties. I can tell you to MAKE sure and get a quality set of gaskets instead of the ones they give you. Mine are leaking after 3 weeks. And yes they were retorqued after initial cooldown. Also get a set of the smaller head bolts for them (7/16s?) The ones they provide have some serious clearance issues on the install w/ the large 1 3/4" tubes. Have fun!!

I had the Hookers... the primary tubes didn't line up with my exhaust ports - so I boxed them up and sold them and got the JBA's - They fit like a glove.

I've been running JBA ceramic coated shortys for several years now. No issues but not a lot of bang for a lot of $. They are Cal legal and they do give the exhaust a richer lower note. Other than that, I'd put my $ some where else. IMHO.

I guess I'd have to ask why you're even thinking about shorties? might as well stick with stock.

What about PaceSetter shorty headers? cheapest in the game but quality im unsure about. A friend has a set of those long tubes on his LS1 F-body for a year and no issues so far.

Minimum performance gain for the trouble.

Long tube, now you're talking.

Pacesetter suck! Sorry but I bought a pair of them first and they would NOT line up and had all kinds of fitment issues. Their tech support was useless so I sent them back and got the hookers. With this type of job, you don't want any other problems..it's bad enough as it is.

And as far as people saying, no benefit from stock?? I have to disagree. Are they better than LTs? NO, but they are certainly an improvement over stock. If anyone has seen the stock mainfolds they should know. On both manifolds the center cylinders SHARE one extended exhaust port as opposed to the headers having a port PER cylinder. Also, the tubes (at least on mine) are 1 3/4" and NOT the barely 1 7/16" (if that) of the factory manifolds. Oh ya, let's not forget about weight...cast iron vs SS or paintes steel. BIG DIFFERENCE. OK I'm done
