Default Removing AIR pump

I am removing the smog pump on my 84 vette, I know I don't need a kit if I get a new sized belt.

Does any one know what belt I can use ?

Wonder why no one has come up with the size for the ribb belt w/o the pump elim... or if there's any issues or reasons as to why you could not do it...

remove it and save like 30 pounds in weight. lol.

that sucker is HEAVY.

By the way, I think the belt is 83 or 85 inches long. There was a thread on this if it wasn't lost in the archives.

Best bet is to look up the stock belt, then get one a few inches shorter and try it out. Keep getting shorter until you get the right one - and POST BACK your results.

Will there still be enough tension/friction with the entire pump removed?

Yes, i did the air pump mod on my 84....I did not remove the entire pump though. I disconnected the pump completely, than removed the air pump pulley and ran an 85" belt. Worked like a charm!! Cost: $40.00/belt. As far as any power gains...dont think so, but my pump was going up, so that was my main reason, plus I have LT headers w/out smog hook ups.

When they are removed, they get jealous and take out the bracket as well. And then you will probably do this:

You can listen to bogus's and buy a $175.00 kit that won't fit or work on your car, or listen to bdaly84.

Step One: Unbolt and remove A.I.R pump.

Step Two: Install your new 85" belt.

Step Three: Bye bye. You are gone.

If your not using an airpump eliminator kit. What are you going to do, for a top bracket for the alternator? Also, I'm thinking that without the elim. pulley, your belt going from you alt. to your waterpump pulley is going to rub on itself going from your power steering pump to your alt. I've been thinking about it, because That is what I would do, then sell the one I've got comming. It would eliminate a little more friction that way. My car is in a million pieces right now. So I can't check for myself. All my pulleys are off. Gotta change dampener, and water pump. Let me know if it works... Thanks, Tom

Ah sweet irony!

CFI-EFI, In your last paragraph you elegantly reveal a subject of which you yourself lack either knowledge or appreciation ...... it's called rapport.

Just a friendly observation, mind you. A little food for thought.

PLAY NICE ... er, ON

Tom, did this myself last month, no issues just as CFI_EFI says remove AIR pump, put on 85" ribbed belt, you're good to go. You are not removing the bracketry, just the pump itself. Belt does not rub.

Woops, I was reading this post late last night. It didn't even occure to me. My car isn't an 84, it's an 88. I've been working on that Vette everyday all day for to long. It must be messing with my mind...

CFI-EFI, I respect your status, and value your oppinions. However your communication skills are lacking. For example: Say Steel Breeze says something to the effect of, "The more compression you have the less octane you need". CFI-EFI says, "Man, don't listen to Steel Breeze, he is an idiot anyone knows it's just the opposite". When in fact you should be saying, "hey Steel Breeze, I believe you are mixed up buddy, it's actually opposite that hehe" Not trying to cause problems here, but trying to prevent them. I have nothing against CFE-EFI. I understand he knows his stuff, and he is a very valuable member. As I said before, "I value his oppinion". I just think he could be a little more tactfull with his comebacks, as they offend most people. I hope I haven't devalued you as a friend. I'm just trying to help keep the board upbeat, and the less knowledgable ones. Not afraid to ask questions, for fear they are going to get stomped on. Hope you understand. Many Thanks, Tom

Is this only for '84s? On my '85 it looks like the belt would rub at the power steering pulley.
