Default EGR switch

Was recommended that I replace the EGR switch. Does my 85 L98 have one? All I can find is the EGR and the EGR solenoid. Is the solenoid the switch?

I think the solenoid is the switch you stated. Going by my 86.

Not by my 87, and when I had an EGR code it turned out to be the switch, a little gizmo toward the back of the engine on the passenger side..close to the dist. or EGR pipe. Worked for me. cheap too.

Just going from memory on my 89 (and this is dangerous for me), the EGR switch is located just about #8 cylinder on the EGR tube. The EGR solenoid is located on the thermostat housing. It is located on a sheet metal holding device that is held in place by one of the thermostat housing bolts. I am right sometimes......and wrong other times

Good advice for the 86-89 L98s, but not the 85. The 1985 L98 is different from the 86-89 when it comes to the EGR switch. I don't believe that the 85 EGR switch screws into the EGR pipe like the 86-89 did. The 85 switch is a different part # and is longer than the later ones.

Joslinm, the original GM part # for your 85 EGR switch was #14087416. You should be able to order it on-line and install it yourself for much less than a dealer or shop would charge. The 86-89 EGR switch part # was #14087415. I checked two different GM Dealer Parts Guides and both show the 85 having the part number ending in ...16 and the 86-89 having the part # ending in ...15. Be sure that you get the correct part.

the egr on an '85 is mounted in the base of the egr valve, under the plenum. I don't know if you need to remove the plenum or not to get to that bugger. This is the next project on my '85, but i'm going to remove the plenum and pull the egr for inspection and cleaning.

I was skimming through my MidAmerica catalog and on page 35 of the actual catalog it shows the EGR switch and what it looks like(a picture always helps) It is listed as EGR Switch for 85-89 for Trouble Code 32 most common fix for this trouble code.

You can look at their site and view the picture as well! at www.madvet.com

Thanks, Matt

I looked at the MidAmerica picture of the 85-89 EGR switch. http://www.madvet.com/shop?frame=3.911 I believe that it is in error. The 86-89 all used that setup, but 85 was different. The 85 may be able to use the 86 and later switch, but that is not what my GM Dealer Parts Guide says.

The picture is definately wrong for an 85. It's located in the base of the EGR valve. I remember taking it out when I replaced it. I didn't know what it was when I did it. I just put the old one back in the new valve. DA!!!! Now the plenum has to come off again to replace it.

Hi.
There is an EGR thermoswitch just in front of the EGR valve under the Plenum. I had EGR codes and I changed the EGR valve as the vacuum membrane was bad Did not hold vacuum. Then I had intermittent EGR codes and it was the EGR thermo switch. a little device with a cable on it. It is a bimetal switch to sense if there is exhaust in the EGR system. The EGR sequence you will find in the workshop manual.

Just ordered from Advance Auto. They don't call it a switch though. See link. Supposed to be the same as item #14087416 as indicated on previous post. Called an Exhaust Temp Sensor. Hope I ordered the right thing.

Either switch will work fine. The diffrence is the length of the wire, nothing else. I'm running a camaro switch cuz it was in stock, vette switch was

The length may be very important for an 85. The stock 86-89 switch on my 88 would probably not reach the EGR, like on the 85.

Joslinm, if Benny42 is correct that the switch is the same except the length, then you probably have the right part. The ends on the switch in your link match the ends on my switch that I just replaced.

Default egr switchs

Hi. The camaro switch as i called it is the longer length of the two switches. It is about 8" longer than the alum. head vette style switch.
'85 switch will fit later, later switch is too short for '85. Sorry if i was vague before.

Benny42, that is excellent info. We now know that the 85 switch should work on the 86-89s and that the Camaro switch is an option for all of us in a pinch. It will work for the 85 and 86-89s. Thanks.

Got my Exhaust Temperature Sensor (AKA EGR SWITCH) today and installed. Only took an hour. Getting too much practice taking the plenum off I guess. Started and drove for a few minutes and no codes. Time will tell. Hopefully better MPG too.
