I hooked up a scanner on my 89 and all it would say is waiting for data. If i put it in field service mode whatever that was i would hear the fan turn on and thats while it said waiting for data. The reason i was hooking it up is i am getting a really bad cut out stumble most of the time when i give it somewhere around 75 or more throttle. it will do that for a couple of seconds then finally go. Still think i need a chip burned for the zz4 cam and heads but that should be the reason for it. anyone have an idea on how to get the diagnostic up and running or ideas on my cut out.

so you swapped in a different cam and heads and now you have a "stumble"? the highlighted part is a slight understatement...start there after you do the basics of fuel pressure, spark, etc...first thing i'd do is get the puppy to a dyno shop and tune it in...best few hundred dollars you'll spend on it. you're leaving power AND driveability on the table if you leave it untuned...
it was just a obd1 scanner from gm i was using. the heads are the same with just a beefed up spring and a little polishing. i was hoping to find something out of spec before i tryed to tune it further. the scanner worked on my friends 94 camaro before i tried it on mine. u guys think the ecm is screwed up? waiting for data
It seems that it might be. One other member said he had this problem and the new ECM resolved the problem. I would check your scanner again on your friends car just to be positive it is working 100%. If it does work on his and not yours then you'll either have to take it to the dealer and have them scan it and determine where the problem lies and get the report and either have them fix it or at that time do the fixing or replacing yourself(Might cut out some of the extra work. they will give you a detailed list of what they find.) At my dealer a scan will cost approxametely $70.
Hope this helps, it has worked for me in the past!
I don't know if I'd be so quick to condem the ECM, have you been throwing any codes? I'd probably do the paper clip thing to check, even if the SES light was not flashing.Have you checked your TPS for the "cut out stumble"?
