Default SYS and SES problems

I have a 94 coupe with 100K miles. When I bought the car 2 years ago the PKE light and SYS lights were on and still are . The car has an after market radio in it, could that be the problem?
My other problem is last year before putting the car up for the winter it was running hot 230/240 degrees. This spring I changed the thermostat with the same degree rating as the old one. The car now runs at 194 max,but the car runs rough, tailpipes are black and the SES light comes on. Code is H44.Could the new thermostat be causing the problem?

SYS light is probably due to the aftermarket radio

damn...

don't condemn the radio... yet.

You need to read the CCM codes.... and you need to get a Factory Service Manual to debug these problems. www.helminc.com.

I will give you an idea, the H44 is related to an O2 sensor problem. I don't remember if it's left or right, lean or rich, but it is an O2 sensor code.

The t-stat had nothing to do with that.

Infact, there is no code I can think of that is directly atributed to a t-stat installation - short of not attaching something... and that might be an H15 - coolant temp sensor.

Take the car to autozone or something and have them read the codes.

Get the FSM and read the CCM codes. I can give you directions for a 92/93, but they won't help much, cause I don't know which pins on the 94 need to be jumped on the ALDL.

On the 94 it is a OBD1 system but it has the OBD 2 connector. You need the short pins 4 and 12, pin 4 is the ground pin. After that turn key to on but don't start (crank) engine. It will display the codes if there are any. Watch for 1, 4 and 9 on the spedometer area. Write down the corrosponding codes for the related modules. Mod 1 is the CCM which is where the SYS error comes from. Mod 2 is the PCM errors and Mod 9 is the ABS system. After it runs thru, turn key off and do it again if need be. You will see a C12 in mod 1 which is not a error but a happy code when you see it, it says the CCM is working and is a self test function. ** Remove the jumper when finished!!

The PKE light is driven by the PKE receiver which in the dash behind the A/C controls. It should flash and go out when the key is first turned doing a self test. It is a self contained unit and would not relate to any other problems in the car. Chances are if the light stays on the PKE receiver is bad. There is also dianostics for the PKE which is a different test setup.

You can post your codes if you have any or find them on the internet. Make sure you get the information for 94 codes.
