Ok, I have read lots of posts that Hypertech Programming does nothing for hp gains and that it only sets rev limiters and turns on the engine cooling fan at a lower temp. I telephoned the factory and spoke to the tech regarding their programmer and the gains in hp for the LT4. They stated "20 additional hp and 35 lbs of torque". Hypertech has posted dyno graphs on their website to substantiate this. The programmer advances the timing and the fuel/air ratios as well as the other standard things. There are skeptics among us, but I for one believe it does increase hp. Just my humble opinion. No flames. :D
Great to hear. Talk is cheap when it comes to these things. Now go out and buy it. Do some dyno runs and let us know how it turns out. Would love to hear what you find. Maybe you can get some other forum members to tag along also at the dyno runs. Do some runs before the upgrade to get a base line. :yesnod:
There MAY be an improvement, but I doubt it is going to be 20 HP and 35 lb/ft of torque. I borrowed the LT4 programmer from a friend who is having some engine work done. I aminly used it to re-program my speedometer for my 4.10 gears, but installed the "Power Program" as well for the hell of it. I noticed no SOTP difference...and I think I would notice a 20 HP jump. It does have some nice options to it, I don't think it is a waste of money by any means, but I wouldn't buy one to expecting big performance gains.
You know everyone say these things are nothing more than a tool to turn the fan on but I think there are WRONG.
Both Panuzzo and myself used one of these (JP still does) and I don't know anyone who has gone as fast as we have with stock motors and a few bolt-ons.
Anybody?????
Well, I have a 1996 LT4 and plan on putting it on the dyno this Friday. The only mod that counts so far is the exhaust.
I have the Breathless intake and Hypertech thermostat ready to install, and the brain is going out to Faschip next week for reprogramming. I don't know about the Hypertech thingy you're all talking about (new to this car) but was under the impression that the only way to tweak the ECU was to send it out, hence my decision. I will post before and after results when I get them, hope this helps.
I had Hypertech Programming on my 96 LT1 with a K&N filter, theromostat and open lid; that was about it as far as mods go. I Dyno'd and had a very impressive HP gain. I am Hypertech Programming my LT4 this weekend. I am sold on them. I think they work. Just my opinion; not trying to convince anyone. We all have to make our own decisions about what mods we like and don't like. :D
I'm using it on my 96 LT1... & I can say for SURE I did not gain 20 HP..!!
However I think it was well worth the $$ as I was able to adjust rev limit, shift points, fans, gears, & I just went to 28" tall tires & just adjusted for them..
Another thing when I put on the taller tires I lost some ET, & MPH (I expected to) However I forgot to reprogram my Hypertech.. I just reprogrammed it, changed the shift points (higher) & will see if I get some ET back..
I would think it would make more of a difference in an auto trans car than in a manual since it also controls the trans. I dont think that the programmer puts out 20HP/35Ft lbs. but I think it certainly helps. For the 300 or so dollars its not a bad mod
If your really looking to get the most out of a program then a person should have their car dyno tuned by a respectable programmer IMO
Yes, if you lean it out and add timing at WOT you can see more HP(up to a point) BUT, on a hot day those same settings will usually hit the max knock retard and then ping away if you go too far, and hopefully thats all it will do.....
I'm not trying to be a dick here so don't take this the wrong way but since you have the programming installed did you dyno YOUR car before and after the Hpp?
I am not disputing the fact there may be a slight gain but 20hp ?
As far as the timing goes, I have stock timing tables from an LT1 vs Hypertech tables.
They added timing between 1800-2200 rpms @ 95KPA & 100 KPA Map pressure. 11° was added at 1800rpm, 7° @2000 rpm, & 3° @2200rpm.
They also Removed timing between 4000-6500 rpm. They removed 5° across the board in this range at 95 KPA, and 3° at 100 KPA. At 6500rpm they removed 6° of timing in both the 95&100KPA cells.
I am sure the power gain for an LT4 is 10HP max including the effect of the 160 thermostat unless they have developed a new program since I bought mine. The do claim 20 HP on other vehicles, but not LT4 again not unless there is something new.
I did my mods and went to the track! the car ran 14.00 I used the programer to change my shift points till I was ;) happy with the results. So on a test day at Lebanon Speedway I was able to go from 14.00 to a final run of 13.68  I think it's a Great tool. When I changed my rear it did the speedo. I was able to dial in my shift point's and rev limiter. My Et's went down but my MPH stayed around 99 100 with or with out it! All the post I've read say when HP goes up so does MPH so 20 hp gain??? I got more out of my exaust workk then anything else. The Old school You Got to let them Breathe :seeya Ya can't change gears and things with out it!I think it's a good tool!
