Not a bad job at all. Remove the plate that the fuel fill door mounts to (the black piece that has the small hole where you can put the gas cap while filling) and pull the rubber boot out that surrounds the fuel fill neck and the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit is readily accessible.
I would consider picking up a factory service manual either from http://www.helminc.com/ or E-bay. You will pay the price of the manual to have the gauge fixed at a shop, and if you do it yourself you will have the book for further use.
The fuel gauge sending unit is a pretty simple system and is easily diagnosed with the manual. It will tell you how to diagnose a always full situation. I am pretty sure that GM sending units measure 0 to 90 ohms, full to empty. I am not sure which is which, it sounds like the wire that sends signal from the sending unit to the gauge is either grounded or open.
Again, with the factory manual it is simple to diagnose.
