My A/C has been down for over a year because the cluch went out on it. Should I just replace the clutch or the whole compressor since it has not been ran for over a year? The lines have never been broken.
Can you turn the outer hub by hand? If it isn't seized, it should turn with minimal resistance. If you can't turn it and the engine stalls when you request a/c - you need a compressor, and probably a lot more.
Any obvious leaks such as compressor oil on the hood above the compressor? If so, the shaft seal is gone and you can either replace the seal (about $50 from NAPA) or go with a new compressor.
The clutch is gone. I am 100% certian of this because I have full 12v being supplied to the clutch with the A/C on. I am just wanting to know if I replace the clutch will the compressor still be good after sitting over a year not being used. None of the A/C lines are leaking or have been broken, my low pressure switch is working and my refridgerant PSI is still good. I do not want to spend $149 on a new clutch just to find out the compressor will not be any good from sitting. Thanks
The green clutch wire has the 12 volts on it as you probably know. The black should not measure 12 volts because it should be at ground potential. Make sure it is. Other that measuring the resistance of the clutch to see if the winding has opened up, there is not much left. Except for the diode across the winding and if that shorted you would not have 12 volts at the green wire and the relay would probably burn the contacts.
Can you change the clutch while it is mounted on the car?
I have searched the forum and found that it is possible. Anybody see any problems with the compressor not working. I have no signs of leaks.Iit has just not run in over a year because the clutch will not engage?
